Changed oil without changing filter, what should I do?
Changed oil without changing filter, what should I do?
So I changed the oil recently on my car with high mileage full synthetic oil. It’s a 1995 Maxima with 200K miles. I was going to change the filter as well, but the filter was too slippery to get off, and I didn’t have a way to get an oil filter wrench before I need the car. So I left the old filter on the car and only changed the oil. The previous oil change was done 2400 miles ago and both the filter and oil were changed. Not sure what oil or filter was used as a shop did the oil change, but I believe it’s a genuine Nissan oil filter as it’s a white filter with Japanese writing on it.
I was thinking to change the oil and filter in 2000 miles which the filter would’ve been run for 4400 miles which is not bad since people typically use the same oil and filter for 5000 miles or more. I used to change the oil every 5000 miles, but the last few oil changes were done between 2500-3500 miles.
Someone at Oreilly said I should change both oil and filter in 1000 miles. The same person also said I can change the filter now without draining the oil and half a quart would come out. Is this true as in does anyone know how much oil would come out if the filter is removed without draining the oil?
So what should I do from here?
