4th gen air cabin quality issue
I recently bought a 1998 maxima gle . The air has a musty and stale smell so wondering if there is a cabin air filter and how to replace it. If not any ideas to help clean up the cabin air ?
Thx in advance. Dan

As far as I know the 4th Gen doesn't have a cabin air filter...
I have an intermittent problem with burning oil smell and the only fix will be to fix the leaks!
I haven't read the FSM on this part yet but the grill below the windshield wipers seems to be an air intake. Make sure it's clean.

Later I30s have a cabin filter. My 99 Max has a spot for it but no filter.
Start with removing the blower motor and inspect what you can from there. As said clean the evaporator. There are cleaning products available you can to spray into the ducting.

Regarding cleaning the blower motor, well, easier said than done from my experience. See my post here for what I had to go through to get mine out of my car. Not a fun job.

There was a thread about it, can't find it right now.
Here is my 99, the cut outs are molded into the evaporator box.
My 98 did not have that.
Also I mean just pull the blower, not the housing/ducting.

I didn't know that! I've wondered about figuring out a way to install one in my car but it's never been a high priority. I wonder how easy is would be to install those later I30 filters into earlier cars....How do you access your empty spot- from inside the cabin or from the cowl? Got any pics?

Here's how to add the filters.

So I'm wondering if any dealer actually offered filters to any later A32 owners with the revised evaporator ducting. Since my 99 Maxima has it, maybe all 99 I30s and Maximas have it? I don't think it's a options thing. Like I said, my 98 did not have it and that car had all the options where as my 99 does not.

Pull your Center air Vents Out.. Behind that is a mesh like Screen that you will need to somewhat maneuver out of place.. Clean it as they are always filthy. If the car was owned by a smoker, this screen is always clogged.. You'll see a huge increase in output from these center vents and although this may not help with smell so much it will help the air flow through the box. mine was so dirty, air flow was almost now existent.
If you delete the mesh screen... the air flow out of the center vents is insane..
