Do MAFs go intermittently or just die?
Do MAFs go intermittently or just die?
I know this may sound strange, but this is the only car I’ve ever had that has a MAF. Anyway, the car suddenly started bucking and stalling the other day. Died like five times during my wife’s 3 mile commute. It showed codes p0100 and p0325. I assume the knock sensor was probably triggered by the mass airflow sensor problem. I pulled the MAF and cleaned it, clean the contacts on the sensors plug in connecting wire, and installed a new air filter. The car seemed to run fine for about a week with no codes or other issues, then yesterday bucked a couple times when I was out. It completed the rest of the trip without incident, but did throw both those codes again. It only has about 125,000 miles on it, but it is a couple decades old. I don’t mind replacing the.MAF, but hate to throw a couple hundred dollars at it and find out that’s not what it is.
Appreciate any input I can get from you guys
Thx

So the MAF connector is known to break internally. It’s possibly to open the MAF and either: re-solder your connections, or solder in jumper wires. There’s a few write-ups about it.
short version: the top square box part of your MAF has a rubber gasket. I personally used razor blades to hack away at it until the top can be removed. There’s some screws and plastic iirc, but you’ll gain access to that connector to perform the repair.
basically: car get hot, solder joints get weak, MAF gets angry. You park it, it gets cold, it gets happy. Etc

I’d recommend replacing it.
With your symptoms combined with your DTC, I’d say the likelihood of your issues truly being a failing MAF, is high.
Even if it turns out that you’ve simply tossed some $$ at your 26+ year old JDM Nissan, it’s my opinion, that that kind of waste isn’t really waste, it’s a preservation.
Also, I’m not sure where you’ve shopped for replacements, but it seems that you can get an acceptable quality unit for well below $200.00.

I say closely inspect the 3 wires going to the MAF. I had to splice in new wires since mine had started to break and was causing intermittent problems. You can test this by idling the car and jiggling the wires; if the car stumbles or does anything different then you can be pretty sure the problem is the wires.
