I was having trouble cranking my car and got many useful suggestions. I have now been told by the latest mechanic that my mass air flow sensor has gone bad and my #1 cylinder is not firing properly. Has anyone else had this problem? I've never heard of that particular sensor going bad?
Would anyone think getting a second hand sensor would be a bad idea?

It sounds like the MAFS. I had a similar problem. Bought a MAFS off of www.car-part.com and saved a fortune.

When My MAFS went, My car went into 'Limp Mode' - ie, It wouldn't go above 2400 RPMS. If that's your symptom, then It's probably your MAF. If you buy it new, its mucho grande dolares - my new one cost me $700 from the factory. But mine was FRIED - It's freaking circuits were fused together! I'd say get Steve's, god, I wish I could've found a deal like that!

 

What causes these to go bad? Damn $700? dude, they ripped you a new one!

 

They (both mechanics that looked at it) are claiming that my K&N air filter had something to do with it going bad. I ended up getting a used one off of a wrecked maxima for $100 and it runs great now and cranks on the first try. The K&N has been promptly replaced.

 

The K&N had nothing to do with your sensor going bad. Put it back in there. Make sure it's clean and oiled correctly. Some OEM's are using K&N filters on their new cars. Even if dirt got past the K&N, to clean your MAF sensor, just use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
