Shine!
I use Simple Green and a presure washer it has never failed me. Then once it drys I wipe this preservative called ARADEX over the hoses and diffenrent plastic parts. It usaully stays clean for about three months. Armorall or something of that nature should suffice for the preservative. Thanks Charles

DON'T POLISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sucks and gets oxidized quickly. I did it to my bike frame and it blew.
If you **** on the engine while it's at operating temperature, it will smell bad.
There are good cleaners around. It looks best degreased and clean. You should clean it good once and keep it up.

what i do is
everytime i wash my car since i had it i pop the hood and spray it down with the hose. then wipe it down with a rag and hit the rubber with some armor-all. kinda "conditioning" it. my motor still looks new w/70,000 miles on it.

I have used some purple bottle of Castrol, or STP cleaner degreaser the past couple times and it has been good. MAKE SURE TO COVER YOUR INTAKE IF YOU HAVE ONE before shooting the hose around in there. And don't try to start your car with the plastic bag still around the filter as I did once .
Someone shared a tip here once that I tried and liked. For the hoses and vinyl etc, under the hood, try using tire foam. Just blast it generously all over the engine bay and let it run off. Works great.
