Racing an Impala SS

Ok so there is this guy at my work that wants to bet me 100 bucks he can beat me in an 1/8 mile race. He drives a stock 96 Impalaa SS withthe regular chevy 350. I run 9.5-9.7 in the 1/8 do I have a chance...I have never seen them race before. I know I would get worked in a quarter but the 1/8 is short? what do you guys think?

I am surprised that an impalla ss with those mods only runs a 13.6.
I thought it had more nuts than that.

You've got it backwards. That car will launch on you because of the RWD and TQ factor and then you will run it down. A 1/4 mile race would be better for YOU not him. He will pull out on you hard from the launch and you will be playing catch up. They run high 14s to low 15s stock, just like a 5 speed Maxima. You will run him down at the end, your chances are better the longer the race is. In a short 1/8th mile race he has the advantage. If he's not stock then you may have a problem...

His Impala is stock and it is not the LT1...also he knows absolutely nothing and he is just going to floor it when he sees a green light so I think I will win, but it is a $100 bet and I have never seen a stock impala run an 1/8

The regular "stock" 350 engine is a defanged LT1. That car has some ***** for how much is weights.

All those B-body Impalas are 260hp LT1's The 305 they were using in the Caprice wouldnt cut the new emissions standards. So they decided to just use the LT1 since it was new and clean. While they were adding the hot engine, they decided to add a hot model to the B-body line up...the Impala SS. a 95 Buick roadmaster with the LT1 will run 14s just like a stock impala...

What did he just say? The frickin suck. I would put $10,000 on your maxima winning if I had $10,000 cash to put down. If you are scared to race a new impala for money you should just not race anyone, ever.

stay away from the older impala's, you will probably loose your cash, but for the new ones, you'll smoke em. I am even wondering if they 6's in them.

I've racing my uncle's 95 SS a couple of times and beat him. All he had on his car was an intake.
Because of the weight of those cars, I think you have a better chance from a stop. Once they get all that weight moving, it will be more difficult. I beat him by about a car and a half to the quarter. We also did a top speed run and he DID pass me at 130 , which makes sense to me because we're losing power pass 5500 RPM's.

I think automatics will have a much tougher time beating one.

If you are scared to race any car or unsure of for that matter, don't race at all.

I think I will win

I really just wanted to know if anyone had some solid times on those cars stock. He is now claiming he just got a chip but I doubt it because he doesnt even know what kind it is. Anyway I am going to race him this wednesday so I will let everyone know the outcome. If I win I gotta buy an STS.

Re: I think I will win

My friend has a 96 SS, and he runs something around 14.9 .. If you're a 5 speed and he hasn't modded it, you should win in a 1/4 .. He'll have a better launch than you though, so if it's an 1/8 you might be out of luck.

With the right driver thats true. A week or two ago I saw the 1/4 mile time listing on one of the national Impala SS sites, the quickest bone stock SS ran 14.46 @ 93.x mph. The next quickest listed on the site was in the 14.6s, and they went up from there to low and mid 15s, with trap speeds very even with a 5 speed 4th gen. 91-93 mph for the stock ones. Keep in mind there were many bolt on ones running similar mid-high 14 second times (and many of them running better too) so as with any car, its all about the driver. I'd put money on myself being a better driver than the impala driver, but the real question is would you put money on yourself or on the other guy?

If you're not sure enough whether you will bet on yourself, maybe you shouldn't be racing...
