Is this dealer ripping me off?

I took my Maxima to the dealer 'cause the CEL came on and they told me that I need to get my knock sensor changed. They also told me it's gonna cost me $275 to get it replaced!! Ouch!! Does it really cost that much to get it replaced? Is there any where else to get it done cheaper than that? Please help.

That doesn't sound off. Only cheaper way would be to do it yourself.

Next time, do the CEL check yourself.

Save yourself the diagonstic fee (if they charge you).

And the knock sensor might be kind of hard to replace depending on how big your hands are.

Some places have given estimates of up to 500+ dollars. They sound a bit more reasonable. If you buy a knock sensor at the dealer they will charge you $170, so reall they are chargin you maybe 2 hours of labor. If you do it yourself it will run you 15 minutes.

FSM sounds like a good investment in this case.

Re: Is this dealer ripping me off?

The knock sensor does not cause the cel to come on. So most likely you are getting ripped.
