PR CAI Instalation

My PR CAI should be arriving very soon . It' my first performance mod and I was reading the instalation directions from custommaxima.com and it doesn't seem that hard to do. I have a 98 GLE and I have never done a mechanical upgrade to my car. Is it easy enough for a first timer to do? Also when its done would it be normal for a check engine light or something to go on?

Check engine light should not come on if you connect everything back correctly. I'm sure your going to remove the battery when drilling/installing so it'll reset.

If your over 100,000 miles,

,its safe to say your O2 sensors will be burned out in a month or so so start saving for them...

The hardest part is removing the stock intake, which is actually really easy, just start unscrewing everything..

Also make sure you line up the template correctly otherwise the new intake will look crooked. Take your time and block out a couple of hours at least to do it. It's not very hard to do, as long as you have the right tools. The hardest part is cutting out the hole on the fender. Make sure you put either the gasket that comes in the kit or something around the edge of the cut out to keep from scrapping noises from the CAI later. Make sure to mount the temp. sensor as specified on the directions and you will have no problems. As stated, you will have to take the battery out all together so, CEL issues shouldn't be a problem, but don't be surprised if you get O2 sensor codes shortly after, as stated in a previous thread. Finally, don't be scared when you hammer down the first time and you hear a loud growl from under your hood, it's just your new CAI saying Howdy!!!

I used (brought) a 21/4" hole saw to cut the hole behind
the battery compartment. made things much easier
Wait until you nail it for the first time

I used a 3.25 hole saw. I sawed it in the correct spot but I had to enlarge the hole onto a oval becase the filter was large and was hitting the fender wells.

This is a great mod

After I completed the install on this, I was blown away by how loud my car sounded at WOT
Take your time. The directions I got were not 100% accurate.

I also did not remove the air temp sensor from the ram air scoop, black thing that is bolted to the top right of your radiator. On my 1997, I had to remove the sensor and the grommet from the ram air scoop and replace it in the CAI. There was a hole for it on my intake tubing. I also removed the whole ram air thing from my car because it took up a lot of engine space and IMO was useless.

When you go to drill the hole, make sure you move the fuse box and battery as far out of the way as possible so you are able to cut the hole properly.

Good luck!

Re: Cool MOD

on another note, i would suggest you get new hoses for the two larger ones that go into the resonator, you dont want to be making a midnight trip to autozone like i did
