If a Knock Sensor is completely broken

and, you have the MIL code to verify that...what happens?

What I mean is -- a functional KS retards timing when knock is detected, and the MIL appears everytime it is "activated"...but, the
MIL will also come on when the KS stops working -- so, with a broken
KS, is your Max ALWAYS retarding the timing? or, should the timing
remain the same, just that the sensor won't be able to retard
timing?

Because, it makes more sense that a broken KS can't retard timing, but
most folks who replace their KS say that there is a power gain, as the timing is back to normal...

does this make sense??????

let me clear up my question...

A KS is supposed to retard timing to protect an engine from knocking.
When a KS is broken, is the car constanly retarding timing, or is it
not retarding timing at all.

Hope this clears it up.

I think it is constantly retarding and that would be why people notice such a difference. If it wasnt at all then wouldnt it stay at stock?

When a KS is "broken", it can be doing a # of different things. Not just one thing in particular.

Great! I'd rather hear that...because after I replaced my KS I didn't experience "OMG" differences...but, most people do...so, this
makes me feel a little better.

Did you reset the ECU, as discussed in another thread that could be preventing you from getting rid of the code/problem.
