I think this is how I did it...
First hold the two outside buttons ( 1 and 3 )
when the light stays on hold the button that you wanna program while pushing the garage door opener button. when the button is programed it will start flashing..... Again this is just off the top of my head and Im not 100% sure of its accuracy but its close.. hope this helps.
John.

thanks for the help guys, it took me a little while but i got it working, apparently my garage door opener is a rolling code type opener, so it took me a little while to figure it out because the directions provided on the website didnt work with my opener

If you got the built-in opener to work with your rolling-code type opener, than I would love to know how...because, with non-rolling code openers, you are simply "lifting" the code into your Maxima's built-in opener...BUT, rolling-code openers use a new code every time
to ensure that others aren't "lifting" your code nearby...That said,
I can't get my Max to open a door with a rolling-code opener...

DAMN, that sounds confusing...

k, ill explain how i got it to work, it basically took trial and error of different methods because the directions on homelink's website did not work for me..here goes: on the back of my garage door opener there was a red button that is a transmitter to the remote openers in both of my other cars, i had my dad hold down the homelink button on far right side in the maxima and one second later i pushed and held the red code sender button on back of garage door opener, we both held for about 5 seconds after that and then it was programmed and working....basically on a rolling code opener (and yes it is rolling code because it says so in the manual) u need to install the homelink system the same way u did ur remote openers in ur car(s); it worked for me, try it and if it doesnt work let me know and let's see if we can't think of something else that will

That's cool. I've never heard of anybody getting a rolling code type to work without the plug in adapter.
