I have a 1996 nissan Maxima SE. I recently got it and am still doin work on it. I've replaced the plugs and I've takin the car into the shop to get it looked at. But when I start the car and have it running for awhile and I am stopped at a red light the rpms drop dramaticly. sometimes it'll sit on the brink of a stall. so the car shudders at times. I've cleaned out the fuel lines, checked my pumps, and changed fuel filters. what the heck is goin on? oxy sensor?

 

Try cleaning out your Throttle body. that might help with the idle problems

 

how do you do that or is it one of those take it to nissan things???

you should also check your idle setting... make sure its not too low.

 

same thinng had been happening to me -- cleaned Throttle body, and replaced my Knock Sensor...the car drives MUCH better...anyhow, I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone.

good deal. thanks all for the help. I might replace my sensors but I am definitly cleaning the throttle body this week. speakin g of which, does any1 know of a site where I can get directions on how to change my sensor?

There was a recall for 02 sensors on 95 and 96's I believe. I had all of mine replaced for free from a dealer even though I'm the second owner and have 66000 miles. Another one went out recently and I had that replaced for free as well. I had the rough idle problems like you did and it turned out my base idle was off. Dealer took care of that too.
