pic of painted clears
Here's a pic of the clear tails that I painted. I painted the outside because I didn't want to break it while opening it up. I think I might have put a few too many coats. It's a bit darker than the stock inner lights.

Did you paint the outside? Looks a little thick...nice and clean...but thick...like it wouldn't match up and like the light wouldn't shine through very good like you stated.
Could you clean some of it off? What kinda paint did you use?

I'm going to see how they look tomorrow by installing them and see how much of a difference. I might get a 600 grit and wetsand them. Then I'll put another coat of clear on top. Yes it's pretty thick right now. I'll wait until I line them up against the stock inner to see how they look first.

Nope, don't think so. That's the bad part.
Now I think of it, if the tails I just paint are darker than the inner red, maybe I just go ahead and paint the inner ones too. Maybe one or two light coats.

Here's a pic of them on my car. Pretty good for what it's worth. The outer lenses are just a bit darker than the inner ones. If you look close, you definitely can tell they were painted on the outside. Not perfect, but good enough for now.

Thanks,

I bought the clear tails used, about $130.
Btw, the paint that I used I bought from Pep Boys.

I got the paint from Pep Boys. I used Plasti-Kote Competition Colors Candy Apple NO.300 for the red and Plasti-Kote Candy Apple/Metal Flake NO.307 for the clearcoat.
I don't remember how many coats I used, but obviously it was a bit too many coats. Best thing to do is to take the tails and hold them next to the stock inner red to see the progress. Then you'll know how many more coats you'll need.
Some people said to paint the inside. I'm scare that I will break the lenses, so I didn't paint the inside. The tails that I got were used, so they weren't in perfect condition. The finished tails kind of reflect that a bit. I think if I had put one or two less coats on them, it would match up perfectly. Only when you look up close can you tell it's painted on the outside. Still though, if you look at the picture, it still look pretty good. So, I'm not complaining.
