After I disassembled (removed pads and clips) and painted my calipers, I'm getting an annoying brake squeal. It sounds like it's coming from the R/R. The pads are hardly worn.

I know there are thin, metal plates that go between the outboard pad and the caliper, and I think there was some anti-rattle stuff on the inboard pad. Maybe I need to re-apply after disassembly? Any ideas or info from service manual would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, calipers and rotors refinished very nicely, and look tight framed in the 18" Zenetti Valeos.

Brake squeal is annoying. Getting rid of it is half science, half black magic. Things you could try...
- Remove pads, use a hand file or electric angle grinder to bevel the leading and trailing edges of the friction material, re-install.
- Use emery paper to "rough up" the shiny surfaces of the rotors.
- Apply Blue Goo anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads.

any PBC grease or a silicone-based grease on the shims should fix it.

Squeal can also be caused by new pads that were not properly bedded-in.

Tomorrow

My guy put new pads and turned the rotors about 5k mi ago. They have been squeeking still ever since. It's going back tomorrow, and I will let you know what he does and if it works. I have heard people suggest plastic shims?

Re: Tomorrow

plastic shims will melt in a second.
if u can get the hardware kit from courtesy or any dealer. it comes w/ all the shims and springs. also use a quality pad. cheap pads tends to squeek a lot.

Squealing brakes

My 97 Max brakes squealed terribly and every time the dealer or mechanic checked them out they all said that i had 90% left. The mechanic said live with it after I tried two different brands of pads.I went to Nissan and bought their premium pads and lo and behold the squeal stopped.
