Need some advice...

My birthday is coming up next week and I'm probably going to be getting somewhere between $400-$500 (I always ask for money, and nothing but money and I'm pretty sure I'll be spending $150 of it for an imitation stock spoiler from spoilers4less. That's going to leave me with $350 plus about $100 I already have saved. Since (after this) I'll be spending a lot of money to replace the BOSE system I want to get a better alarm - I just don't trust the factory one on any car.

I did a search on the subject, but mostly I just turned up a lot of posts b!tching about the stock alarm on the Maxima (which made me even more nervous). And I was already pretty nervous after I noticed a few kids checking out my car in the parking lot of a theatre last night.

So... any good advice on alarms in the $450-$500 price range (sorry if that's a weird range, I've never had aftermarket alarms installed on my previous cars, so I'm not sure the price of a high-end or low-end one)? I'm hoping that there's something fairly good that I'd be likely to find locally, since I want to buy and have the alarm installed at the same place (makes it easier on me if there's a problem with the alarm or the install).

Also, are there are any downsides to having an aftermarket alarm?

I don't know how much this helps, but Crutchfield sells an alarm for ~$200-$250 that carries with in an insurance policy to cover your deductible up to $1000. I think this is a pretty good deal - I'm not sure how your insurance works, but mine covers my mods and stuff, so I'm still cool even if my car gets ripped off.

From what I've heard, the Viper 550 is the way to go. It's around $450 installed I believe.

My insurance covers aftermarket parts too, but rather not have the car stolen in the first place.

In the price range you are talking about, high-end, there are lots to choose from. The viper mentioned is really good, clifford makes some really good ones too. There is no down side to an aftermarket alarm as long as you don't have some hack put it in. Just look at the features like 2 stage shock sensors, remote start, remote trunk, remote door locks, loud siren, starter kill, etc. Look for good features, most alarms now a days come with most if not all the features listed above.
