Is there a guide to taking off the TB? I've never done it before and would like to do this in the next few weeks...

That looks like he didn't take off the TB, just the MAF...

How hard is it once the MAF is off to take off the TB? Any guides (preferably with pictures)?

it shows how to take out the whole intake/airbox unit. plus then there is a second page link at the bottom that shows the cleaning process. i know the pictures are not great, but its fairly self evident. what you should do though, that it does not show there, is completely remove the TB and expose the intake manifold. once its off clean everything and replace it. the way he does it on there is just spray into the TB and clean it while still attached to the IM. that is bad due to the fact that some of the cleaner could get into the manifold.

i can understand being nervous though - i drove 3 hours each way this past weekend to have someone with experience show me the steps. after it was all done tho i saw that i could have done it myself.

just unlatch the top of the airbox and disconnect all the hoses you see attached to the housing.
then remove the electrical connector to the MAF as well as the connectors to the TB and IACV. then loosen the O ring tightener on the flexhose that goes into the TB. at that point you should be able to remove the whole unit. put it aside. be careful of the MAF.
next step is lift the throttle cables out of the quartermoons and disconnect them (one for the gas, one for the cruise control). then get a 10 or 12mm socket (i forget which one) and remove the 4 bolts holding the TB onto the manifold. once u got that off you can unscrew two screws to release the butterfly plate inside the body. clean it all thoroughly.
IACV is the same process except there are three bolts instead of 4. plus there is a bracket holding one of the electical connectors that is a pain to get at.

im bored at work so i decided to draw up some stuff on a pic of my bay. keep in mind i just learned all this 3 days ago. ill do my best to show what we did.

1) the WHITE lines - undo all 4 of the latches holding the airbox together
2) the GREEN arrows - i think there are only three hoses attaching themselves to the intake system. remove them all by twisting and rocking back and forth.
3) the SINGLE PURPLE arrow - goes to a bolt (hidden in the pic) that holds the top of the airbox to the rest of the intake. unscrew this.
4) the RED arrow - this is the O-ring tightener i was talking about. just loosen this and slide the accordian tube off the lip of the actual throttle body.
5) unplug the plastic electrical clip from the MAF (no arrows)

you should now be able to remove the whole intake from the top of the airbox all the way to the TB opening.

1) the BOTTOM DOUBLE BLUE arrows - lift the throttle moons up and create slack in the throttle cables. you should be able to figure out how to slide them out (there is a little tooth and an opening it catches on).

2) the TOP DOUBLE BLUE arrows - these are just two of the 4 bolts on the TB. the other two are on the bottom. remove them all using either a 10 or 12mm socket (plus maybe extension).

3) the DOUBLE PURPLE arrows - these are two of the 4 electrical connectors on the IACV. remove them all. they are all color coated so dont worry about keeping track of which goes where.

4) after you have removed the 4 bolts for the TB, there should be two small hoses connecting to the bottom. they are coolant lines and shouldnt be too difficult to get off. a negligable amount of coolant will spill.

this is an example of a very dirty TB (shot from the side that faces the engine, not the airbox). that flat plate in the middle of the opening is the butterfly plate. that is what opens/closes when you use the throttle.

5) the IACV is even easier. just remove the 3 bolts and clean off what you can.

this is the part you should be cleaning. you can remove the three screws that release that blackened dome, but i did not due to the fact one was stripped.

replacing the gaskets is recommended, but not neccesary.

IACV and TB cleaned, new fuel filter, and iridium spark plugs. Car pulls harder, throttle is a bit smoother. Will update when I empty out a tank if my mpgs went up. I hope to god they did.

well i reused my gaskets. mohfpro90 said they looked fine and i agreed. then again my car only got 40k on it. maybe if ur in the 100+ range you would want to think about replacing them. both together shouldnt cost you more than 20 dollars.

- Throttle Body Cleaner is a must
- you will need a 10 or 12 mm socket (like i said i cant remember which one)
- you WILL NEED an extension, possibly a variety of 2" 4" 6", etc. getting at the bolts on the underside of the TB and IACV is a colossal ***** if you dont have them.
- maybe an old toothbrush/rags to scrub all the crap off with
- a selection of screwdrivers (they also help to get the hoses off)

you should probably disconnect the battery before even starting on all of this. i DID NOT when i cleaned them this weekend and was throwing a MAF code after replacing the intake. not that it really mattered, cuz i just cleared it, but theres no reason not to.

That's right Cool. Have some rags & maybe q-tips, tooth brush & toothpicks ready also.
Careful with the MAF.
Careful to re-attach stuff correctly, do not force electrical connectors. They only fit the socket that they were designed to fit into.

Mine has 75k, but I'll probably pick up new gaskets anyway, just to be on the safe side.

I'll be doing this next week as a Christmas present to My Boy Blue (my car)

Thanks again guys

it would be foolish not to replace the gaskets. they cost next to nothing and you have everything apart.
