funny auto shifting....is this supposed to happen?

this has been happening to me since i got my car or since i can remember it happening...when i'm on drive, even without pushing the button in to switch gears i can hold the stick (shifter? i dont' know what to call it) down and it wont' drop into second but it will still move down a little like between drive and second....this has never interfered with my driving but felt funny and used to scare me...i thought my transmission was bad but i dont' know...anyway, when i'm accelerating at low and high speeds, if i try to push shifter down, it gives me resistance like it should, meaning it only stays in one place...but otherwise i can move it down a little...as if there's a litlte space that i can move around in between D and 2.....maybe this happens to all maxima's or mine just has an extra space to it? or maybe my transmission is bad....does anyone know what the problem could be?

it's not causing any problems wit my car nor my driving but when i drive my mom's 94 camry, i never feel this....this movement i can make on my max....
