Input on 1996 GLE purchase, please

I went shopping today, found a 1996 GLE with 56K for $10,500. How does it sound? I have not driven it yet, I was talking to the dealer manager, he is picking it up tonight (it is his parents in law's, they traded on a 2000). I want to know what the consensus is on it. I will be doing a KBB and NADA search as well, but I want educated opinions from you guys.

Obviously the mileage is good, but is that still too much for a 1996?

I know it is gold/tan, tan leather, white faces, alloys, sunroof, etc, and it will have a warranty. They are lowballing me on the trade, so I am going to buy it and sell my Jeep privately.

The mileage is good, but it still sounds too high too me. Just my opinion though.

Low milage mint condition Maximas command preimum prices. But try to get them down at least $1000.00.

The mileage is EXCELLENT for a '96. Ask him if there were any major problems with the car. The price is kind of steep for a car that is about 6 years old. Maybe drop down a $1000.00 or two.

Thanks so far, keep them coming

I will be driving it tomorrow, and trying to negotiate. I am sure that they will tell me that they already dropped the price off of "book" (which is true- book is between $12,000 and 13,500, believe it or not), and will try to justify the price based on the fact that it will be certified and warrantied. I would love to get it to 9500, or even 10,000.

On a side note, I drove a Civic SI while waiting, it was kinda fun...best "small car" that I have driven...but i STILL want my max.

I drove a 2000 GXE w/ 50,500 miles at a nissan dealership, 45,000 mile waranty, they want $14,995. I would LOVE to have that one, but lack the cash...

I understand the lack of cash, but 4000 more or alittle less and you got a 2 year old car. Just something to think about.

Re: Input on 1996 GLE purchase, please

Sounds like a fine deal. I recently purchased a 96 GXE with 118k miles (but the odometer is busted, among other things, so it could be much more) for $7,100...I'll probably be spending a good $600-900 fixing it up.
The car itself should probably be in good condition with only 56k miles on it, especially if it belonged to a fairly old couple (the dealer's parents in-law you say?). Of course you should try getting it for as low as possible, but if everything appears fine (have it checked at a trusted mechanic or Nissan dealer) then go for it.

Have it financed, try to pay it off after 14 months or so, sell it for around the price you bought it for, then enjoy putting a low (or high, if you like) down payment and low APR for when you get yourself a new 2003/4 Maxima.

Then again, I'm just starting to learn how all this crap works, so I might not know what I'm talking about.

I think 10k is kinda high. I'm thinking 8.5 to 9k.

I paid 10.5k for my 95 A32 back in May of 2000. There was a 96 GXE w/ only 36k for 12k.

... So at the time of the original psoting of this thread, it might have been a decent deal, but now

Anomalies threw me off, so that prompted me to look at the original date.

So few items I notice:

1.) You, start a thread about buying a Maxima was semi-suspect. Not that you don't like them, but it was just a little out of the ordinary.

2.) I almost sharted myself when I saw the mileage.

Very funny. Had me going there for a minute til I saw the original date.

Was kinda weird at first since the past few threads from you made it seem like you were happy with the Pilot.

That GLE would probably be around 6-7k now.

10k is way too much, be patient you will find a great deal. I won't look for a 96 anyway. Look for a 97 or 98 with higher miles, it will even out. Although the mileage is tempting, remember that this car is 11 years old. You'll feel left out without the look/styles of the 97-99 maxima's or newer. For 10k look at the 5th gens.

How much are you going to have to replace on age alone? Unless the maintenance records are flawless, you should adjust for those costs as well.

Hey phenryiv1,

I think you should be in the market for a 5 Speed G20 like me haha.
Anyways, edmunds.com has this cool thing where it gives you a "true market value" and I ran it (you might want to try it since you know what options it has installed and I just googled your city and got a zip code so u might want to change that too) but here is what it came up with:

Seems like your paying a little much for it, good luck! If all else fails you can buy my 96 it only has 90k hehe!

It may give you a chance to bring the price down with the dealer..
