60K mile service - is power steering/brake fluid flush necessary?
I just went to the dealer to get a quote on the 60k service for my mom's 99 Maxima's 60k service. I plan to do most of it myself -
spark plugs
air/fuel filter change
oil/filter change
throttle body cleaning
coolant flush
and have them do the tranny flush service. However, they insisted that it is necessary to have a power steering and brake fluid flush as well. Is it necessary?
BTW, the total 60K is $535 plus tax.

I have no idea about power steering fluid flush, but a brake fluid flush isn't a bad idea although not necessary. i didn't do mine until 85k and they've worked fine. That's also a DIY thing. Even easier w/speed bleeders - $20-30 for the speed bleeders and then your brake fluid.

You can probably do the brake flush yourself.
If you are familiar with brake bleeding, you can do the flush. Instead of one or two pumps to bleed the air from the brakes at each wheel, you do about ten pumps at each wheel to completely flush out the old fluid in that line.
As for the PS flush, I wouldnt worry about it. Just keep it topped off.

Yes the power steering fluid is necessary to change the hydraulic fluid gets contaminated over this period of time What you can do is purchase a turkey baster at a stop & shop and suck out as much fluid as you can you may not get all of it then (be mindful of wher the luid livel was before the exchange) and pour in some synthetic atf fluid then start car and turn the steering wheel as far left as possible then turn far right as possible do this about four times to purge any air out of the line if you perform this once a month for the next 3 months all of the fluid would have been flushed out and replaced with new fluid. Reason for this proceedure is it abates the later purchase of a steering rack wich is a great deal of $$$$ around 400-600 for a poperly rebuilt one not including the install, so its up to you $6.00 worth of atf fluid done 3x every 40,000 miles or wait to have the rack replaced.
