Alternator- my diodes are out of phase

just had my alternator looked at for my whining noise and the shop said that the diodes are out of phase. does anyone know what that is? Im going to get it overhauled with new brushes, diodes and other stuff but I just want to know if anyone here has experienced with their diodes being "out of phase"

Diodes are components which convert Ac to DC so that your battery can be charged. If the diode stops working then u start hearing that whining noise and your rectifier or voltage regulator dosen't work properly.I think there are 4 diodes in our regulator and if one is bad it starts affecting the others and i think this is what he means by out of phase.I replaced mine with a used alt and i will take my old alti to the shop soon..
