temporary gauge cluster swap

i want to get the needle kit on my car, but i dont want to mess things up by doing it my self. I read that you can send it to import intelligence and have them put the kit on for you. However i cant afford the donw time and i want to pick up a cluster in the meen time, but i have a few quaetions first.

first will a non-digi cluster work in my 98, and will putting on a different cluster mess with the ECU.

I don't think a non-digital one will work.

If you find a digital cluster, if should be fine with the ECU.

I think you better be very careful with that.

Most people say that the internal ECU and the Speedometer's Odometer BOTH record your cumulative mileage. Thus you will have a different reading on both - granted it will not be a big difference, but it WILL be different. Of course you can explain the difference, but if you go by the exact letter of the law, you have altered your mileage, and have broken the law. Upon selling the car, you may be required to say "exact mileage not known", and that may make selling your car a bit suspect. It really isn't that hard to change needles, and i would suggest that you try it yourself, or get someone to nearby to help you. Where do you live - I'm experienced at doing it.
