with the engine on, make sure u cant feel a leak there..... but seriously, it can't be good for your engine, but damage wise i doubt much will happen...

Did it fall into the cumbustion chamber and if it did, Find the spark plug located with the cylinder and take it out and start the car and wait about 5 seconds and shut it off, Whatever is in there should be thrown.

If it's rubber, It should burn up and everything will be ok, I had a metal o-ring from the fuel injector fall in mine and i did this now i'm crusing away.

I would get that grommet out of there... I haven't seen the inside design of the rear bank valve cover. If there isn't a baffle (to keep oil directly away form PCV Valve) separating the PCV valve and the rest underneath... the rubber piece will be amoung the 2 camshafts and all the moving parts associated with it. If there is a baffle/chamber it may just remain there but you still need a new one grommet.

Maybe someone who has seen the inside of the rear bank valve cover can be of more help.

Get it out of there! I doubt if it will melt, the temperatures are not that high. Most likely the camshafts will shred it and you will get chunks of it in the oil journals.

Little chunks of rubber drifting around in your engine can only do bad things. Get it out of there ASAP.

You might have to suck it up and pull the rear valve cover to get to it, but oh well...

Same thing happened to me. I couldn't believe that the gasket fell in. I was desperate to get the gasket out. I got a hanger and bent the end to make a small hook then I bent the hanger about 2 inches down to make a 90 degree angle. As soon as I put the hanger through the PCV valve opening I could feel the gasket. It took some work but I was able to move it up to the hole and use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out. It was tedious but it solved the problem.
I was able to reuse the gasket. I would recommend putting the valve and gasket in the hole first, then carefully placing the rubber tube connection on top. It's not easy but if you work it enough it will
go on! Don't give up yet!

I hope this helps.

It's not going to melt. No way. It doesn't get nearly hot enough to melt that kind of rubber. It is currently sitting in your valvetrain getting shredded. Those little rubber pieces are going to mix with the oil and eventually clog all kinds of oil ports in the head. It'll take awhile but you need to get it out now before it's smashed.

First look through the hole with a light and see if there's a tiny chance you can still get it out with one of those small-part-grabber-things or stiff wire or something.

If not, you're going to have to pull the cover.

But definitely get it out of there....

It's not going to melt, and even if it did, melted rubber circulating in your system is hardly a good thing. An engine flush will do nothing for you.

Boo had a good idea about the coat hanger, but barring that, I think you might have to suck it up and pull the valve cover.

Hey, I'd try everything too before I pulled the cover. Just make sure if you do manage to get it out that it's more or less in one piece... Don't compound your problem though by getting other stuff stuck in the engine too...

There's some other recent thread where some guy dropped a nail, a frigging steel nail, down his spark plug hole.... Now he's screwed.. At least you can just pull the cover and not the whole head!

If you do pull the covers, make sure you get new gaskets and everything from the dealer..

I tried the shop vac but it wasn't enough suction because the vacuum pipe was too big. If you could get a vacuum pipe that fit snug over the hole you may be able to get it to the top and then use pliers to get it out.

Iregula -- I just put the hanger in about 1" down. I was careful not to push the hanger all the way in the case!

Get a piece of heater hose that will fit in the hole and then duct tape to the vacuum cleaner hose.

ummm.... I'm pretty sure from looking at it that that valve cover would be a nightmare. I'd get a Haynes or Chiltons manual and go over that real well first.... Also pre-order all the gasket's you'll need from a Nissan dealer...

The thing might still be in one piece, hard to say. If it is in little pieces then nothing but time and patience will be your tools(and maybe 100 or so rags, toothpicks and qtips...).... Just remember not to leave pieces of anything else in there....

The valve cover is a piece of cake to remove; just 10-12 bolts. It's the upper intake manifold that will take some time. I haven't removed it, but I've heard it takes 3-4 hours.

I had mine off in about 20 minutes. The rear bolts to the back of the engine are a pain, but no way it would take over an hour...

Rubber pieces block the oil galleys -> oil starvation -> siezed engine -> very unhappy camper -> very poor camper

The rubber gasket for the camshaft cover is the reusable type. I can understand your reluctance to put the old one back in, but if you really need your car, you can reuse it. I used the old gasket on my front one when I polished it 3 years ago, and I don't have any leaks.

As far as putting it back together, I don't know exactly what to say except that you put it back the way you took it apart.
