not a good idea in my opinion. I was told my many professionals that 235/45 need to go on 7.5"

Now to clarify, that is my opinion which is infuenced by who I delt with when buying my rims and tires. TireRack and Bridgestone/firestone.

The diameter from top to bottom of tire will be the same. The width is what is different. If I remember correctly with my tires, potenza Re950's, it went from 8.5" with the 225 to 9" with the 235. Don't quote me on that. Go to TireRack website and look at the techinical info on the tires you are considering, they will give you all the numbers you need for every size tire. I had the same dilema because I found a set of rims I wanted but they only had 17"x7" and I wanted to run 235/45 R17. In the end I waited and found 7.5" and ran the tires I wanted. Again, some people will tell you it's just fine to run that size tire on a 7" rim. Not me.

Yeah, I'd avoid 235's on a 7" wide rim. Many of us running 225/45/17 on our 17x7" rims. A smidge smaller but still acceptible.
