thinking ov getting an auto tranny max

hey sup guys Just wanted to let u know that it think this board is very informative and i appreicate all the help. NOW on to my question... I was thinking about getting a 97-99 SE 5spd but after hearing about the carrier bearing problems i kinda doubt it now. SO...... what about the automatics?? do they hold up good and if so how long if they have been taken care of.

I was thinking about getting another accord 98-99 V6 but it only comes in auto and ive been hearing some bad stories about those trannies not lastiing much past 60k (****ty for honda if u ask me)

so can u guys give me some guidance and feed back on the autos and personal experience.

thanks
Cris

My dad's '95 SE auto was the car I drove all through college. I was HARD on that tranny. I mean brake torquing, manually shifting, popping it in drive from neutral at 4,000 RPM...it had over 150,000 miles on it when he was hit and the car totalled week before last. And NO tranny problems. The shifts got rougher and more deliberate, but still...I thought that was dang good. I for one think the autos last longer than the 5-speeds, at least the '95s. My old 5-speed's tranny went at 127,000 miles. But don't take my experience as gospel.

Auto tranny's can last literally hundreds of thousands of miles, and, what's more, the life of a manual tranny (in any car) has a more direct relationship with the driver's ability to shift properly (besides normal wear and tear) and therefore they tend to need replacement sooner (another expense that could have gone to other things...) My opinion is that if racing is a regular part of your life you should go with the manual and bear the expense but otherwise plan ahead and use the $ for mods or whatever else makes you happy and go with the auto. Good luck!

You would be faster with a manual .. but automatic is nice to have if there's alot of traffic in your area.

Yes i agree....i have a 95SE auto with 112K miles and no problems, i think its time for a tranny flush........and maybe a coolant flush, and why not an engine flush.....and a toilet flush....ok, im done...

I tried to find a Max with a Honda 5-speed, but it didnt work out....

Sounds like a soild plan, the nissan manual has it's problems so if you can live with an auto there you go. I miss the honda 5-speed, but you have to turbocharge the Honda to touch the Max.

I guess all cars have there weak points....$hit beaks so drive what you like.

An Auto Maxima with Don's VB Mod comes pretty close to matching all but the best manual drivers out there.

People say that the Auto tranny is weak compared to our engines, but our engines are AMAZING.

Auto Trannys are only Excellent.....get it?

Just my $.02

i have a 96' auto with about 85k miles and no tranny problems. i brake torque it and shift manually and havnt had a problem yet. if you plan on doing a lot of racing and stuff, just get the 5speed, but i am happy with my auto, although its not as fun, when im driving in heavy traffic i praise the fact that i have an auto. plus i have just begun moding it and its pretty da*n quick as is. just choose which u like best.

I had a 96 gle auto. Its 5spd now. Explain to me how an auto tranny fails at 36k. My stepfather babied the car first 26k, and I drove it hard 10k. I would go with the 5spd, even if the bearings fail. If you're up for it, you can always fix it yourself. IMO i think the auto tranny would cost more to fix.

Don't get an automatic, I hear they are extremely slow and you are unable to get a decent 60' time with them too. Get the much quicker and sportier blue collar transmission if you are a real enthusiast.

They won't take any racing abuse either.

Don't look at my signature.

rofl about the honda trannies...the dude i raced last night in the accord was tellin me if you brake stand/burn rubber too much the trannie will crap out real quick.....55k miles of driving hard and its still all good....well more like 15k of driving hard, my mom was kinda a wuss, but she still drove it somewhat hard.....rofl, then when she got her 2.5 TL, and she drove aroudn with me, she was like, wow your car is so much faster....

well im not really into performance. reliability and comfort are my prime concerns. i know the auto is slow but does it last a long time as long as your change the fluid?
