Changing Atf Soon, Needs Help........

Planning on changing my ATF soon, and thinking using Redline. Should I just drain the fluid and fill it up with i think 3 qt($30).... If i do the transmission flush that will cost me $80 + maybe 8qts ($80).... is it really worth $160 to flush all the old stuff out?? or should I just do the drain and fill more often with redline???? pls hlep....

Also is it easy to change my own ATF fluid?? what size wrench do it need???

I just did step 1 of a 4 step process to convert 97 Maxima to Amsoil
ATF. I elected not to get flush by dealer but drain and refill 4 times allowing a week between steps to let new ATF mix. This should get me to a 93% ratio of synthetic to dino ATF. I've have just finished step 1 last Sunday. It is super easy and takes a 19mm socket. By the way there are 23 bolts on the tranny pan. Can you tell what I was doing while the tranny drained? The results have exceeded all my expectations with only step 1 complete. I would have been happy with the results I got if it took all 4 steps. On the last step I plan on dropping the tranny pan and cleaning it and magnets with cleaner (probably throttle bowl). Based on my initial results I definitely made the right decision. I am not familiar with Redline products but a lot of forum members swear by them. My only recommendation is to definitely go with synthetic ATF. By letting tranny drain real well I got out 5 qts & 2 ounces of ATF replaced with same amount of AMSOIL ATF. I figure it will take 20 quarts total. I took old ATF to Advance Auto for recycling. I got a super deal from a forum member, I got 2 10 quart containers of AMSOIL ATF for $85 with no shipping charge. I live near him. To net it out I would definitely do it, since my car was flushed by dealer only 16,000 ago I chose not to flush. I'll continue to post updates as I progress through steps 2, 3 and 4.

Well I chose to flush mine myself by disconnecting the outlet from the trans to the cooler and pumping out 2 litres at a time and refilling, of course after I drained and refilled the sump. It takes almost 10 litres before it becomes clear but does not mix dino and synthetic and its all done at once.
I just didn't want to mix my expensive synthetic with that dino stuff and the complete change is pretty easy to do.

Jim

PS Its also a great time to put on a trans cooler and do it all at once.

If you do it Jime's way you'll save ten quarts of Synthetic ATF which will more than pay for a tranny cooler. Sounds like a win win to me. If I had to start over again I would use Jime's procedure.
Be well!!!!

I wondering if I just recently have the transmission fluid flushed, but used regular ATF, is it a good idea if I want to switch to synthetic to have it flush again and then put the synthetic in? If bring my own synthetic ATF to a place like Jiffy Lube, you think they will flush and put in the synthetic fluid that I bring?

So if I do that, flush out the old ATF fluid, and then refill with synthetic ATF, how many quarts do I need again? Thanks.

Btw, which Redline ATF is it? There's a Redline D4 ATF and a Redline Synthetic ATF.

For everyone who insists on Redline, it's the D4

The system holds 10 qts but you will have to supply a lot more than that to get flushed at a place like Jiffy Lube. Not sure on this but I have heard from 15-18 quarts because of the amount in their system and lines.

Its pretty easy to do yourself and takes a lot less ATF vs Jiffy Lube.

Yeah seem like a doable DIY job. When it's time for me to do it, I'll be sure to contact you and get some help, if you don't mind that is.
