wind deflector exploded

This morning I was driving to work and thought someone threw something at my car... it "hit" so hard my inside rearview mirror moved. I looked and didn't see any dents and the glass wasn't broken.

Today at lunch a friend asked "what happened to your wind deflector?" It shattered but stayed intact. There are dozens of cracks/lines in it.

Happen to anyone else? I have to call the dealer and get it replaced.

Mine started to spyder crack around the bolts after a few runs to 120mph. I just took the stupid thing off. It's quieter now too with the roof cracked or open fully.

These aren't spider cracks... it sounded like my car got hit with a brick.

I'll take it off tonight and drive without it until I get it fixed. He said they'd replace the deflector when I get the transverse link recall and hood TSB done monday, but if I like it without the deflector I might have them just put it in the trunk.

I took the deflector off of my car as well, and the decrease in noise is definitely noticeable, however there are small scratches/lines where the deflector sat.

Mine had a bunch of small cracks around each bolt when I bought my car. I didn't notice it, but a friend pointed it out when I showed him my new ride. The dealer replaced it for free (obviously). They were even nice enough to do a very good job of cleaning the roof and waxing the whole area before putting the new on one.

I took the deflector off a previous Maxima and it is quieter around town. The deflector helps a lot if you open the roof on the expressway though...

Hood TSB? What is that all about? I haven't heard of this...

Please advise,

Same kind of thing happened to me on my drive home this summer. I was driving past a semi and heard what sounded like something exploding. Everything seemed fine until I realized my folding mirror was 1/2 folded in. When I stopped for gas I noticed the entire plastic cover had been broken off. The plastic where it mounts is broken and cracked but the mirror still works. Dealer wants $215 unpainted. I'm going to call USAA and see if they cover this like they do windshields.

You guys aren't joking about the sunroof deflector. I just picked up my new car this past weekend. I checked the deflector, and there is a crack by each bolt. How long does it take them to fix that? Do you actually have to leave the car there just for that?

Our 2k2 was like this when we picked it up. They replaced it under warranty. They had a stock of them for this reason - I think it was a defect in the plastic?

i've already..

had mines replaced about 2 months ago... I had my 2k2 se since february and didn't notice until at least mid april... the freakin dealer I went to gave me a hard time and didn't really want to fix it... and guess what the punk service manager said about the warranty on the the wind deflector.... 12mos/12k miles... fock....it was part of the car and not a dealer installed accessory.... it should be under the 3yr/36k miles warranty... its already cracking again... looking forward to taking it in and getting it replaced...along with the recall work on the transverse link. it is definitely a defect in the plastic material, but one service guy i had called said otherwise...he was blaming the other dealer that replaced the first one for putting on too tight.... if so then why the fock did i have to change in the first place coming from the factory. anyway, just my gripes...

Re: wind deflector exploded

I don't have the wind deflector but I do have the plastic nose protector and it saved my @ss. Well my nose anyways.

Was washing my car about a month or so ago and noticed jagged hole in the nose protector, with a bunch of cracks around the hole.

Obviously, a rock had nailed it at high speed and punched through. With a feeling of dread, I peaked around behind the protector to see what damage this rock had done to the paint. Much to my surprise, not a scratch. I guess the protector absorbed enough of the energy to protect the paint.

The best past was that I took the nose protector off my car, walked to the parts counter at the dealership and said: "I'd like to take advantage of your lifetime warranty."

Guy said, "No problem, sir", took the busted nose protector and came back with a new one. No receipt or anything.

I think the bottom line is that the wind deflector is a piece of JUNK. Mine came from the factor just fine, and then began to spider a month into ownership. I looked on my invoice and it's an option for $69. Give me a break! I advise everyone to take theirs off before the marks on the roof get too deep. IMO it looks better without it anyhow.

You know, I read this post last night and today guess what I find...a crack in my damn wind deflector...Hmm, to remove or not to remove. I think I'll make the dealership fix it.

The same thing happened to me the last time this thread went around. Mine was fine...until I checked it a few days later. Damn thing. I'm blaming it on going over 120mph. I don't think it can handle the stress. I thought about making the dealership fix it for kicks, but I don't have the time.

I learned that lesson from my 93 SE. Got my 02 home and that piece of junk was the first thing to come off!

Get it off quick. It will destroy your paint in short order and then you'll have to repaint the roof to take it off.

Question: How do you take the marks left on the roof from the reflector...last I remember it was almost like a rust color fine line where the reflector pressed against the roof? I tried to scrub off w/ terry cloth & soap, & clay bar & still there??? what can I use b/c that why I put reflector back on b/c of that mark until I can figure out how to remove

When I bought my 02 SE the deflector had multiple crack around the bolts and several in the middle. There was a horizontal scuff mark and it looked like someone had ran up under something with it. Anyway the dealership replaced it under warranty. But tommorrow its coming off! Thanks org members.

It's too late already. The longer it's on there the worse it'll get. There is no removing the mark because your paint is already gone.

I replaced mine with an adhesive one piece (ventshade windflector), but for a different reason: mine wasn't cracking, but the bolts kept coming loose, and when you tightened them the damn bolts were so long they scraped the rubber molding of the galss when it opened and closed. Even tore a small piece of rubber. They are truly POS's...

That barn door that I was forced to buy on my 02 was also the first thing to come off. It's sitting in the garage never to be used on my car. Anyone want to buy??? lol

Sorry. Good luck, but a second coat of paint on the roof won't be much better. The problem is the wind deflector traps dirt underneath itself and grinds away the paint as it vibrates in the breeze. They may be able to sand down the entire area a few mils and buff it back out but that's risky too as thin as the clearcoat is on a new car. And you'll have a nice orange-peel free area where the work was done. A friends '91 SE-R had one on since new. We took it off to paint the car and the paint was completely gone and the sheetmetal was rusted underneath the thing.

I just had my left rear door and quarter replaced on my '02 Altima and the new paint is so shiny that the rest of the car looks flat. This is because of the lower-gloss water-borne crap paint the EPA requires manufacturers to spray nowadays. The good old-fashioned isocyanate-laden carcinogenic acrylic urethane the body shop sprayed on is sooo much nicer that I want the whole car recleared now.

Re: wind deflector exploded

talked to local service dept... he said "it broke, that's no surprise." I asked and he said "almost all of them have broken or cracked enough to need replacing."

I also asked about taking it off to keep from scratching the paint. He said as long as I keep it, I can take it off. They have to send it back to Nissan to 'prove' they replaced it.
