I am contemplating a mesh grill for my 02 SE

What can you guys tell me about these mesh grills I am seeing in the forums. I dont wanna do the cheesy Home Depot thing for the valance. My buddy did that on his Eclipse and it just doesnt look right. I see some of you guys have some professional ones put on.

Is it really a pain in the butt to cut out the grill to put the mesh one on???

How do you keep the Nissan emblem in the middle???

I see the one from "Grill Tech" come in black or silver. Does anyone think the silver grill will look ok with the chrome rims I got??

Can I get a chrome one anywhere??
(I bought replica chrome rims from a 2000 SE, looks sweet!).

Is there any "group buys" out there for the grill and valance???

Any feedback would be helpful,
Thanks!!

Hey Pmm3rd, if you buy a street scene it's a direct fit, some use tie wrap to attach it, no cut is necessary.

You dont want to cut the Nissan grill cuz it is part of the bumper so if you cut it and after want it back you will have to buy a new front bumper $$$.

To keep the Nissan emblem you need to remove it, and stick it back with glue.

For the chrome you will need to have the grill chrom process at a specialized shop after you bought it.

For the group buy, visit : http://forums.maxima.org/forumdisplay.php?forumid=21

Cheers

I recently put the Grille-tech valences on and I like the change in look. They are working on a main grille now. My suggestion to them was to come up with slotted pieces that allow the emblem and silver edges of the existing grill to come through. I may photochop to see what it would look like. You can just throw a mesh over the thing and put the emblem on but I think it would look crappy (stick out too far).

Just my opinion. I was waiting to wash before taking pics (getting drizzled every day), but I might run out and take 1 or 2 to play with.

Does the Grill Tech one come with those wire ties to put it on??? If so my concern is youll be able to see them. I have an 02 SE, is that the case???
Slotted pieces would be a great ides, no cutting involved, if you put a pic together can you email it to me???

Thanks for the feedback!!

Yeah it comes with those zip ties. I attached them so the box end was behind the grill (PIA to reach back there and secure them - prolly should have taken the splash guard off).
The little black pieces are really barely noticable. I'm messing with using muted silver model paint to blend them in.
The cool thing if you get tired of it, snip snip, they're off.
THe edging on the grills is really top notch. Grille-tech did a good job. I had to try them back and forth till I got a good tight (but not to tight) fit on the left and right side. Whole thing took 10 mins.

Took some pics

I took some pics but bad light (in the parking garage).
I'm going to play with adding the main grill to see what it looks like.
They actually look better overall but here's an idea anyway.

Shaydz,
Thats not to bad a pic, it looks quite good actually, I cant even see the wire ties. Where do the ties connect? top, bottom, in the middle somewhere. Ive been thinking and that would really be an excellent idea to put grill pieces in between the original main grill thats there now. It would give it a little more aggressive look and you wouldnt have to rip your car apart to do it. Now only if some could put it together (lol...). I'd love to see a pic if you ever get around to it, good luck !! (I think I may give it a shot?)

Shaydz, thanks for posting the pic. I think it looks great. I ordered mine and am totally psyched (even more after seeing your car). I also like your idea of a grille that works w/the existing grille. Hmmmm.

Anyway, your car looks tight. Thanks again!

the 2k2 grill is not part of the bumper. only the 2k/2k1 grills are.

Pmm3rd, go to: http://www.tvcracing.com/JMSGrills.htm

this is my friend's company. he has a grill guy that makes custom grills. ive seen the one my friend has on his mustang. they are heavy duty and look nice. if you are interested i can have him use my car to make a template so he can start making Maxima grills. they're not very expensive. looks like most of the grills are around $60

Newman,
Are you sure the existing stock grill is not attached to the front bumper. All research Ive done indicates so and that there is heavy work & cutting involved. Tell you what though, Shadyz and I were discussing putting sections of mesh to put in between the existing grill somehow. That way its a tad more agressive looking and there would be no taking off the bumper, drilling, cutting, etc....
If your friend could put something like that together Im sure it would generate some decent interest on this page! Let me know!
(I'll go check out his site soon....)
Thanks.

i am 100% positive. mine has been taken on and off a couple of times right in front of me. (ive had it painted black...twice). the grill is held on by 3 bolts along the top edge.

the 2000 and 2001 grills are attatched to the bumper but the 2002 (and now 2003) grill are not.

ill talk with my friend about the grill guy and i'll see what we can come up with.

Photoshop with a grill

OK, I'm not that good with Photochop, but here's is a before and after view with the mesh grill. What do you think of the look?
Oh yeah, look at my pages while you are there. I need new pics. I've
done a few things to the car since these were taken.

Good job Shayydz. I think it looks good, and would definetly think about it if something like that were to be made. Obviously a whole mesh grill there would still look somewhat better though I think.

What do you know about what Newman said for stock grill to be held in there with just a few screws? I didnt know that for my '02. His friends web page with the Mustang grills is really nice so maybe he can hook us up with some different Maxima grills, I guess we shall see!

i just talked to my buddy mike. he is going to call the guy who makes the grills right now and let him know he has some customers who are interested.

i have his phone #. Pmm3rd, check your PMs in a few minutes.

I'm probably one of the few that have taken a grill-tech grill and cut it tofit the 2k2 grill area. I think it turned out great! I've gotten about 6 comments in the last couple weeks about it, and suprisingly from people who aren't particularly car enthusiasts. I'm very happy I did it, but it was a pain to make the template and cut he grill - it is a pretty heavy mesh.

If oyu need it chrome, it would be pretty eas to buy chrome paint and paint it. You may need to repaint it after a few thousand miles of rocks getting chucked up at it.

I only used the supplied black ties at the edges becuase they are sort of noticeable. In other places I bought some thin gauge wire that would not rust and basically used it as a big twist tie. It seems to be holding up well.

Is the mesh like the normal Grille-Tech (round holes - powder silver) or more diamond cut (They are starting to experiment with that). I can't tell in your sig. Do you have close-ups.
I'd like to try (operational word - try) to photoshop this design again with the diamond cut.

The grill mesh I got had circle holes. I assume thats the newest? I had to buy a F150 grill and cut it to size.

That's right. I saw your post earlier today. I've been doing a lot of searching and I am back at the thread I started with. I think Chris told me about it. He's working on a diamond mesh thing and liked your work (I suppose he told you).

Maybe a new grill offering in the future, huh?

I really want a grill as well..

HOwever the Grill tech for the lower valence looks nice but it sits to deep inside the bumper..

I would like to see the grill kit from www.customaxima.com for the front and valence on the 2k1's to fit the 2k2s

I like how it looks..

When is this going to happen?

I used the black ties that were supplied but secured them from the inside. I put 3 per grill. middle of each end and top of the center.
Before putting in place, pull the zip from inside through a hole - to out then back in - even them up. Put the grill in place being careful that the ties free ends are on each side of the bumper piece you're mounting too. (In my case center horizontal vane at ends and upper vertical at center). When all is secure, I took some silver piant and touched up the ties. Dilute it a bit because it will stand out otherwise.

Chris is using my template to make the diamon dcut version. They should be only a couple weeks off now from being able to ship them.

The lower valence section/s are already available.

Yeah, I talked to him a week or so ago. He sent me some of the edging he uses on the grills for a different project I'm working on.
He's a real nice guy. Good to work with. He told me he was going to use your templates.

Looking forward to seeing the diamond cut type stuff.

2k2 grill is not part of the bumper. you can take out the grill in 15 min 3 screws in top plus 3 plastic clips and push the small lever in each side and the grill is out.
