Rain sensor

Would you like a rain sensor?

Key Specifications/Special Features:

Activates wiper when the sensing area on windscreen detects liquid (rain or water splashes, mud)
Does not activate by any dry object (dry leaves, cloth)
Automatically adjusts the speed of the wiper based on the density of rain
Wiper will be deactivated as soon as the sensing area is dry
It is not a standalone system, must work with an existing wiper motor in vehicle
Can be overriden by manually adjusting the speed of wiper
Switch is available to turn system off whenever not required (during drive-in car wash)
Supply voltage: DC 10 to 16V
Operating current: 200mA
Operating temperature: -30 to 85 degrees Celsius
Relay current: 20A
Type of signal: Visible light
Wiper motor: Positive or negative trigger
Wiper response time: 10 milliseconds
Wiper mode: Low, Intermittent or High
Detection sensitivity: 0.005 milliliters (water)
Detection sensitivity: 0.005 milliliters (water)
Detection medium: Water, moisture, mud and any liquid
With 10 milliseconds respond time, driver can focus on driving without having to manually turn on wiper during sudden splashes of water
Trailing wet car is no longer nuisance as detection of even 0.005 milliliters of water will activate wiper thus reduces driver's distraction

hmmm

are you asking as a follow max owner who has the hookup or just a vendor trying to sell us something? You need to clear that up if you want some response here from fellow .orgers. I see you've been signed up a few months, so I'm cutting you alot more slack than people that just pop in with a sales pitch. We *really* respond to write-ups *hint* *hint*

San Diego here..I had a 2000 SE that I just sold, I never refilled the washer fluid in 2 years. With my 2K2 I 'm not sure if I've used the wipers yet?? But if I lived in a rainy environment, it would depend on the cost, but probably not. The wiper switch is only an inch away at all times!

Its one more computerized thing that tells me when I need to do something, that if I am a competent driver I should alreay be doing in the first place.

I also dont want my wipers to wipe at the slightest dampness either (adjustable or not). When its raining, I barely run the wipers anyway.

Trailing wet car is no longer nuisance as detection of even 0.005 milliliters of water will activate wiper thus reduces driver's distraction
What...? Turning on your wipers when its raining is a distraction? Puuuleeeeze. If this is a distraction for someone they should not be driving in the first place.

no...

I want control of this aspect of driving. Very often down here you drive through just the fringe of a raintorm and get a drizzle which, if the wipers went right on, often smears into a streaky glaring mess. At that point you need to manually hit the washer control anyway.

Sometimes I like to have the car running (waiting for someone to come out of a building, in heavy traffic, etc.) and use the downpour to help wash away dried bug guts, etc. from the windshield...I let it 'soak' before wiping. (No I don't let the car go for long periods without a wash...I live in the country in the South and bugs are a DAILY nuisance).

RE: Would you like a rain sensor?

I have one it's so cool!!!

It's attached to my shoulders I belive it called am A.R.M

When it's starts to rain these really tricked out things come out called F.I.N.G.E.R.S that automatically turn on the wipers.

If any .org members don't have this you should get one or maybe two.

i dont think i would buy one, even if it only cost $5. if it were free, and you installed it for me....i would think about it. seriously, if moving your fingers is hard, get off the road. this is a pretty useless addition to our cars. try the honda crowd, they'll buy anything

being a little harsh

Having never had rain sensor wipers I may be off base here but it does not sound like a ridiculous option. I don't see how this feature could be viewed as a slur on someone's driving abilities. I could use their argument to say that automatics are for bozo's but I don't. Clearly this kind of thing has a regional component so its understandable why someone in LA may not be interested whereas someone in Seattle might. I would be interested but cost and installation would be a big factor.

I'd like to be able to turn it on and off myself, but it would be nice if the car could automatically adjust the wiper speed based on the amount of rain.

When driving through irregular rain, it gets to be a pain to be constantly adjusting the speed of the wipers.

agreed...when it gets too fancy and too complicated, it breaks down easy too. I know someone who owns an S class for 2 years already have problems with this device.

It is a novelty, but it works pretty well. My dad's ES300 has it and I was very skeptical until the one day it rained here in Las Vegas. It adjusts the speed very well depending on amount of rain and vehicle speed. It eliminates the overuse of wipers by most drivers, you know, the ones that have them on at full speed when it is just drizzling. I almost got it on the Max when I got the Clifford, but I decided against the AG4 since the Max has Auto headlights and some other features that were included.

Like I said, its a novelty to those of us that live in the desert climate, but it is still cool.

Speaking of full speed use...

has anyone else noticed how the 'high' position of wiper speed just isn't as fast as it should be (relative to other vehicles)?

Even my truck has faster sweeping wipers.

What I would like is an intermittent wiper that that lets me have shorter intervals than are currently available. Between the low speed and the fastest intermitant there is too much of a gap.

How does it LOOK cool? It's just a sensor. It's like the auto headlight sensor. It doesn't really add an image...

I'm gonna swim against the tide here and say that for the right price I would be interested. I wondered why Nissan didn't include this feature. I mean heck the steering wheel is heated for crying out loud, thats just a joke in my opinion. VW's have rain sensing wipers, I don't think tahts lame. And for those of who who say it takes away from driving, I say just the opposite. I think it allows you to concentrate more on your driving and less on the wipers.

For me, this feature isn't neccessary, but would be very useful. If it rained as much where you live, as it does here in Seattle, you'd probably feel the same way.

I deem it useful. I live in PA and for the past few months its has rained alot. The main thing I like about it is that it adjusts to the amount of rainfall. I get tired of adjusting the wiper speed. I It give's you one less thing to worry about, just like the radio's that raise their volume when at certain speeds like on the 2K3 Max's. I'm interested in how much it costs, looks, and how easy of an install it is??
