Raced a BMW 328

I raced a 328 (don't know what year) on the highway yesterday. He was tailgating me at 70mph on a 2 lane highway. So I just floored it and he did too. Thing was I couldn't run away from him at all, we went from about 70 to about 110mph and he was in the exact same position in my rear view mirror. Later when we caught up with traffic I saw he was in a 328. I drive a automatic 2k1 SE. Im wondering if he coulda been able to go faster if I wasnt in front of him. Are they faster then 2k1s?

Alot depends on if he was running a stick or auto.

YES, EXACTLY!! same exact phenomenon happened to me, i think. my friend (auto 2k max) was following me on the highway (2k2). i hammered it, and so did he, but it really seemed like i didn't pull away from him at all from like 60-105 (or i pulled very minimally).

Hmmm, I didnt know about this. But I couldn't switch in any case since we were both in left lane bypassing lotsa cars on the right 2 lanes. But if I were racing next to him, he woulda beaten huh? Since he kept up exactly, he must at least match my speed.

or since he was behind you, and not next to you, if the difference wasn't that big, then you may not have been able to notice it in your rearview. if he's an auto, i believe the bmw website claimed a 0-60 time of 7.4 seconds (pretty sure, but dont quote me on that). if he's stick i think it was 6.7. very comparable to the auto 2k1 max. i dont know the quarter mile times. but i'm guessing the bimmer would have superior top end, so who knows....

I have no idea of the outcome.. all i know is.. i raced my cousin's GS400 and with him sitting behind me .. from 75 - 110 mph he was 2 cars behind.. and that never changed.. he was always two cars behind.. but then i raced him side by side.. and we started at 80 mph.. he got a half car jump.. and by the time we got to 120 mph.. i had 4 cars on him..

Well 328's dont have superior top end and at those speeds acceleration slowws down drastically. His limiter would have kicked in at 128 (what all US Bmws are limited too except M series).

328s compare very well to 3 liter Gen5s, both

in stick (0-60 around 6.5-6.7 secs) and auto (0-60 in 7.0-7.4) all these figures depending on who tested them

Not all BMWs are limited at 128, my old 540 (not an M-car) was limited at 155; the limiters were set based on tires....cars with Z-rated radials = 155 limiter...

No, that said, my old Gen4 with a y-pipe would regularly blow away the 325s and 328s...

On a street/road track (not drag) the 328 is very comparable to the 2000/2001. There's a 328is in my class with suspension upgrades (like me) so we're about even in power and handling (except that he has RWD and I have FWD and he's slightly lighter).
Overall, the 328 in a road race has a very slight advantage but it's so minimal that it really comes down to the driver. To give you an idea, when we were racing on Sunday, he was 5 hundredth of a second faster than me. Very close. As for straight line power, I think it also depends on the driver because they are too close.

not flaming, i'm asking because i really don't know. so you're saying a bmw would be slower, say 70-120 than a comparable max would be (comparing 328 to 2k1, and 330 to 2k2). again, not to flame, but intuition would say that those german autobahn cars must fly at those higher speeds.

No No No

You're not listening. A possible reason for him keeping up with you is because he was directly behind you. When you draft someone, you have very little wind resistance. You are able to drive at the same speed w/ much less throttle.

Exactly! Drafting makes more of a difference than you would realize especially if they are really close to your car.

I'd love to, but last time i posted it - let's just say my story wasn't very accepted by most members of the board. It was a 2k2 Max (auto) vs. 330ci almost a year ago when i first got the car.

I can PM/Email the events if you want

Long story short i beat him, you should be able to see my (then, newbie) summarized post halfway down this thread

I'm sure it was a driver's race and he may or may not have pushed it that hard. The 330ci's are plenty fast and i'm sure if given another chance/situation the outcome would come out quite differently.

there is a reason that BMW dominates this portion of sedans.

Assuming your cousing was committed to that race, he may want to take his GS in for servicing; the GS400 should beat all but the 6sp 2K2 Max without too much effort.
