It had just finished raining and I pulled up to a red light. All of a sudden this latemodel Red Grandprix GTP pulled up next to me and the driver gave me this look like "what kind of piece of crap is that you are driving." I just smiled. The light turned green and we both gunned it. I flew of the line and as for him, well after a gratuitous amount of wheelspin, he left the line. By the time I shifted into second I was about one and a half car lengths ahead. The speed limit on the road I was on is 45. The cops are notoriously bad at giving tickets so I stopped accelerating at 60. All of a sudden he flew past me going probably 80+ and the next thing I know...Blue lights..I almost died from laughing. All I did was smile as I drove past him. He must have been embarrased, cause he had a friend in the car with him. I know I would be, getting shot down like that.

Sounds like the person you raced was an idiot. Most that do any off-track racing are.
To defend responsible GTP owners such as myself (it's true), we are not all retards. I looked very close at a '01 Maxima SE and liked it alot. It just came down to the price at the time. The GTP had more bang for the buck.
Maximas will beat stock GTPs on the high end (due to speed limiters, 145 vs 128) and may be a tad faster above 60. GTPs do have a problem with wheel spin off the line because of the ridiculous amount of torque they put out (280ft-lbs stock). From 30mph or so it will be no contest, the stock GTP will smoke a stock Maxima.
A well modded car (aftermarket torque converter, sticky tires, etc) and halfway decent driver will launch amazingly well w/ no tire spin.
Don't waste time racing idiots, afterall they might bring you down w/ them, go to a track.
