my parents

"my car" is actually my parents car registered under my dads name. I am only 16 though and this is in New Jersey. I don't get my fully unrestricted license until I am 18. When I turn 17 I get a graduated license.

well I fall into two of the above catagories...I'm a spoiled brat whose father is leasing the car(worst thing he ever did) and that's about it...I do work, so does that lower my bratyness?

when someone asks, i say i own it. yet it's financed ... so i only own a bit of it. but it's in my name, so i'll own the whole thing someday ... unless i refinance again ... or trade it in on a newer one ...

is there anyone in america who actually owns their car anymore, especially one that's less than a few years old? what i mean is, when i say "own a car" i assume, "own a part, bank owns the rest", as opposed to leased, or borrowed, or belongs to dad or wife or company.

long story short, i wanted to check the first two ...

I must disagree with your comment in the vote selection that leasing is the worst thing to do. I realize that it is more costly than owning, that is a given, but I have found some distinct advantages to leasing if one is willing to absorb that cost.

First of all I get a brand new car every three years. I like that. Secondly, the car is usually under full warranty for the whole period, another plus. Third, I don't have to hassle with selling or trading one in at a wholesale price. I just give the dealer the old car when the lease is up and pick out a new one.

I agree. I don't see many people keeping their Max for more than
3 years anyways. Something better comes along and they buy that.
If you just cycle through cars you might as well lease. Unless
you drive 20k miles a year or more.

And to add to that... very few people actually ever OWN their car. Most trade it in before they ever see that infamous title. And by trading it in you can easily loose more money in that transaction than what leasing would have cost you.

Besides, leasing forces me to keep cars for 3 years (which I never did before) and frees up my other cash to buy a second fun car (like the '95 Supra TT 6-speed that I had for 3 1/2 years...paid cash for that!).

I own my Max. I have the title. But I owe the bank $19k still.
Maybe different banks do it differently, but I have the title to my car. I can sell it to whomever I wish whenever I wish for however much I wish.

Which one do I check?

I seriously doubt you have a clear title, what kind of loan do you have? The bank is usually listed as a lien on the title, and has to be paid up before the title is released. If you have the title and the bank is listed as a lien, you can't sell it until the bank signs off on it.

I bought my car using a unsecured line of credit so I own it outright. I just happen to owe the bank money as well. They don't know what I used the money for though so my title is clear.

I own it. Paid cash (well, bank check) in full the day I picked it up.

Ahh, the miracle of stock options...

Re: Re: Re: Who owns the car you drive???

actually if you driver less than 15k a year. it's smarter to lease. most of us finance for 5 years. assuming you put 1000 down, you probably pay $500-$500/month. in 3 years you sell it or trade it in and you're lucky if you make enough to pay the bank for what you still owe. when you lease you put down $1000-$1500, montly payments are around $350-$400. after 3 years you give the car back and if you lease another one from the same dealer they will most likely roll the down payment or give you some kind of deal.
It suck I have to drive 65 miles a day.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Who owns the car you drive???

this is so wrong... it only makes sense to lease if

1. you absolutely can't afford a new car but *need* one. My wife and I needed a reliable 4WD vehicle because we lived on a mountain.

2. you, without a doubt WILL get a new car every 3 years. My father refused to drive a car in its fourth year (he's weird like that). If you plan to keep the car longer, a lease is dumb.

I own my 00 SE, NMAC loan was recently paid off. It was very nice getting the title in the mail!
My previous Max, 97 GLE was leased because I had 2 offices and could write off part of the lease on my taxes. Now I have only one office so leasing did not make as much sense.
The worst part of leasing ( I leased 4 in a row) was the wear and tear crap they pull at the end of the lease. It's blackmail to get another car from the same dealer/manufacturer
