Who owns the car you drive???
#2
my parents
"my car" is actually my parents car registered under my dads name. I am only 16 though and this is in New Jersey. I don't get my fully unrestricted license until I am 18. When I turn 17 I get a graduated license.

when someone asks, i say i own it. yet it's financed ... so i only own a bit of it. but it's in my name, so i'll own the whole thing someday ... unless i refinance again ... or trade it in on a newer one ...
is there anyone in america who actually owns their car anymore, especially one that's less than a few years old? what i mean is, when i say "own a car" i assume, "own a part, bank owns the rest", as opposed to leased, or borrowed, or belongs to dad or wife or company.
long story short, i wanted to check the first two ...

First of all I get a brand new car every three years. I like that. Secondly, the car is usually under full warranty for the whole period, another plus. Third, I don't have to hassle with selling or trading one in at a wholesale price. I just give the dealer the old car when the lease is up and pick out a new one.

3 years anyways. Something better comes along and they buy that.
If you just cycle through cars you might as well lease. Unless
you drive 20k miles a year or more.

Besides, leasing forces me to keep cars for 3 years (which I never did before) and frees up my other cash to buy a second fun car (like the '95 Supra TT 6-speed that I had for 3 1/2 years...paid cash for that!).

Maybe different banks do it differently, but I have the title to my car. I can sell it to whomever I wish whenever I wish for however much I wish.
Which one do I check?

I own it. Paid cash (well, bank check) in full the day I picked it up.

Re: Re: Re: Who owns the car you drive???
actually if you driver less than 15k a year. it's smarter to lease. most of us finance for 5 years. assuming you put 1000 down, you probably pay $500-$500/month. in 3 years you sell it or trade it in and you're lucky if you make enough to pay the bank for what you still owe. when you lease you put down $1000-$1500, montly payments are around $350-$400. after 3 years you give the car back and if you lease another one from the same dealer they will most likely roll the down payment or give you some kind of deal.
It suck I have to drive 65 miles a day.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Who owns the car you drive???
this is so wrong... it only makes sense to lease if
1. you absolutely can't afford a new car but *need* one. My wife and I needed a reliable 4WD vehicle because we lived on a mountain.
2. you, without a doubt WILL get a new car every 3 years. My father refused to drive a car in its fourth year (he's weird like that). If you plan to keep the car longer, a lease is dumb.

I own my 00 SE, NMAC loan was recently paid off. It was very nice getting the title in the mail!
My previous Max, 97 GLE was leased because I had 2 offices and could write off part of the lease on my taxes. Now I have only one office so leasing did not make as much sense.
The worst part of leasing ( I leased 4 in a row) was the wear and tear crap they pull at the end of the lease. It's blackmail to get another car from the same dealer/manufacturer
