6 spd tranny problem

Here is what happens:

Take off in reverse spiritedly, not too crazy though and there is a clunk in the tranny. Put it in first, take off hard enough that you are on the threshold of loosing control and the same clunk. No slippage at all. No noises at any other time. It sounds like if something falls/slips in place due to torsional loading and then it engages. Can not be felt, only heard.

I would appreciate some thoughts/speculations of what it can be. Please no “Take it back under warranty” replies because I will.

It’s 2002 6-spd hlsd.

Thanks

I was told by Nissan it is the tranny. they used their instruments to listen to it. I think I heard the calipers before but those are not as loud. The tolerances on the sliders are quite tight. This sounded like there is an 1/8" "backlash" for lack of a better term.

You sure it's not an engine mount? Something's moving around in there.

Or maybe the worker forgot a chopstick while having lunch on the line.

Are you sure it is not yhe exhaust bumping the underside of the car? Sometimes it hits the bottom of the car when you torque up the engine on a launch.

Do you have a FSTB? Wasn't there clearance problems with some models where it would clunk when first put into gear?

Yet another Maxima Problem. I am starting regret trading in my 2k I30t for this 2k3 maxima. Oh well you couldn't get a 6-sp in the I35.

realize that people tend to only post their problems. when was the last time you read a post saying "i got in my car to go to work this morning and everything was fine!"?

no car out there is perfect. some will have problems.

you have an awesome car. there is nothing to regret.

I don't regret it but since I got the car I have been through three 02 sensors and having to take the car in all the time is getting to be a hassle.

I like the car its fun to drive and decently quick, I don't know, I guess I expected a little more from Nissan quality.

Ok I will say it - I got into my Max this morning and went to work and everything was just dandy. I loave driving this car. My 2KGLE has had only one little problem (bad O2 sensor - replaced by great Nissan service). There are no rattles, squeeks, wind noise or any TSB issues. Just a great dependable driving machine. I couldn't be more please in an automobile.

i guess its just hard for me to see where some people are coming from. i have not had a single major problem with my car. i had to take it in twice because my sunroof drainage tube got disconnected then the same thing happened with my AC condensation drainage tube. ive been very happy with my car. maybe thats why i feel like i should defend it.

If I go over about 10 MPH in reverse the stick will pop out of reverse and go into nuetral. I of course get a big clunk when this happen's. I thought this was normal in 6spd 2002 max's? Hmm, I always figured nissan did this on purpose to keep speeds low in reverse... lol.. So the rest of you can go say 20 in reverse with your 6spd's?

I beleive Frankencar Steve's max does the same thing, after hearing this I thought for sure it was normal.

I have the same problem with my 2K2. I have 24k on the car and it just started about 3k miles ago. I have only noticed in first, but I need to check reverse to see if it happens there as well. I only hear the "clunk" right after clutch engagement and under full or near full throttle. I am suspecting an engine mount . . . or possibly an undertightened wheel, or undertightened hub/drive shaft bolt . . . The only thing is that the drive shafts fit into the hub with splines so this seems unlikely . . . It could also be a worn CV joint . . .

I have also had the recalled control arms replaced and have had my clutch/flywheel replaced under warranty as part of the recall on those parts.

I brought the car into the dealer to have it checked out, but it was right after a snow storm and full throttle acceleration in first lead to a lot of wheel slippage so they couldn't replicate the problem . . .

Let me know if you figure this one out, so I can get the same repair . . .
