Question about shifting in an automatic and RPMs
Well I guess a couple questions....
I drive with the auto stick a lot. It helps in traffic and such and honstly lets me pretend a bit I have a stick.
My questions are:
Is it ok to drive in 2nd or 3rd gear for a long time i.e. 10 miles while the RPMs are above 3000 but below 4500 or am I askign for death on my tranny.
And when you auto owners use the stick do you redline when accelerating hard?
I had more but its late if I think of them I will add to this post. Thxs guys and dolls.

I really don't think its THAT big of a deal shifting manually on a automatic transmission. I mean the gear change and shifting is all controlled by the computer. You may actually gain like .1 second on your 0~60 time and you worry yourself hurting the transmission, You have to ask yourself is it worth it? shifting manually on your AT is actually hurting your Miles Per/Gallon too.
My advice to you is this. If you are driving locally like in a city with lots of traffic or stop and go situation, shift the **** to "3" so the computer only uses 3 gears which avoid un-necessary (for got how to spell~) shifting to 4th gear, which will actually save you some gas.
Second Advice, Since its call a AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, Just leave the shifting job to the computer.

Think of it this way: How many people ask if it's bad for the transmission to travel over 85 mph for an extended amount of time? Answer: no one. If your going over 85, you're over 3000 rpm.
Is it bad for the trans? No, unless you're constantly on and off the gas quickly. If so, then it puts a little more strain on the fluid, clutch packs, actual gears, etc. as far as the trans is concerned. It does put more strain however, on the engine and trans mounts. They're trying to hold down the torque that you're multiplying by having the car in a lower gear. Just make sure to service your trans regularly.
To answer your other question, I shift 500 rpm before you want the trans to shift. If you manually shift the 1-2 at redline, you should be moving the lever at no less than 6100 rpm, unless you want to hit the rev limiter.
Around town, I leave it in 3.
And when did Daimler-Chrysler give Nissan the copyright to "Autostick"?

That seems uncomfortably high for me.
The engine will have a higher temperature than normal (although you probably won't notice it on the gauge), and your trans fluid will be at a higher temp also. I wouldn't recommend it.
If you're higher than 3k (my opinion), upshift. And if your in 4th gear, those 10 miles will be over before you know it.
auto shifting
i only like to shift with my auto when im at a red light ready to launch kind of hard or when its really slippery...
downshifting to 1 or 2...holy cow, it feels like i have 6 wheels or something, more tourque? is dat right?
but other than shifting it back up after launching, i never touch my gears. whats the point? just at launching..thats the best.
