What to buy after Maxima?

What to buy after Maxima?
I have a 2K2 Maxima 6-speed, and I won't be trading it until 2004, but I'm doing my research now on what I should get next. I kind of settled for the Maxima because I could not afford what I really wanted, but I will be in much better shape in a couple of years.
These are the characteristics I want in a car:
Four Doors
Seats Five Comfortably
1/4 mile = approx. 14 seconds
Manual transmission
Rear or all wheel drive
Leather/luxury interior
Maxima has all of these but rear drive, but I want that, too!
So far, the only two I can think of are the M5 or the 540i. Is there anything else; and please don't suggest the 330, it's too small.

540i, g35<--wow, the leather is gorgeous...no wait the car is gorgeous
I think the g35 or 3.2type S are the only cars that fit that requirement that cost under 35,000. If u have the money get a E55.
S4, at most 4 people and a midget could fit.

you didn't specify price, but M5 is double the next most expensive car in your list... was cost a concern?
if not, M5 all the way. If you're a mere mortal like the rest of us (meaning "money matters") 540 and g35 are the best bets.

agree
I agree with the last post. An M5 is a pretty big jump from a Max. The 5-series are a good match against the Max with a M5 being a clear winner (unless you really mod your Max). You will need at least a 530 and probably better to reach your times.
A friend tried to get me to look into Lincoln LS before I bought my Max. Nice looking cars, but I just couldn't get myself to buy another GM product. They certainly meet your criteria though.
Limiting yourself to a MT (which I always do) really cuts down your choices. It seems like only the Germans, a few of the Japanese, and a handful of the domestics allow for MT's anymore. Given the rising popularity of the clutchless semi-autos I imagine that MT's won't be long for this world. Personally I'm not too thrilled by this but I'll deal with it then.

Re: What to buy after Maxima?
What car could you not quite afford?
Are you looking new only or used is sufficient?
Cars that look to be available in 2004 that may meet your criteria
Audi A6 2.7T 6spd (maybe w/ a chip)
BMW 5 Series (they're 14sec besides the M?)
Cadilac CTS V series (possibly manual)
Chrysler 300N (Supposedly switching to RWD, possibly manual)
(Is the Dodge Charger coming out, and is it the same platform?)
Infiniti G35 (may come w/manual in sedan form. Fast enough?)
VW Passat W8 "Sport"
Volvo S60R/V70R

What's with you people recommending the 540i over the M5?! If you have the money to get an M5 I would strongly suggest it. My friend has one and they are quick as hell! If you want a mercedes, get the E55 AMG, I believe they still make those.

adding to the comment on rwd preference
acuras can be ruled out as a choice since they don't have rwd 4 door sedans.
mb's don't come in manual trannies either.... unless that's what they are of the manumatic versions....
if you don't want domestics then your only choices would be german (vw, audi, and bmw) and nissan/infiniti (g35)....
i'd go with the infiniti g35 with i were to go your route since i have a 2k2 6spd also...

What is wrong with you all, nothing beats a MAXIMA, nothing else could compare to it.
Just kidding I just got my 2k3 so I am more than happy, if money was not an issue I would definately have a Skyline GTR. Just thinking out loud.

Wow, I posted this, and then I had to leave. Never expected this many responses, but I really appreciate it. I would love an M5, but it's a little too much. 540i is feasible. Audi S4 is a bit too small, MB doesn't make manual transmissions, and Acura is FWD. G35 seems like a reasonable choice, assuming they will offer a manual some day.
I haven't heard much about the Audi RS6. Anybody have pricing, transmisson information? That may be a winner if it's under $60K.

Infiniti G35 or BMW 540 w/ manual.
But the BMW has horrible reliability, BMW's=the new jaguars
Many have mentioned auto tranny only cars, or even FWD, so I will suggest an auto tranny in case that requirement changes: Infinti M45.

So..since I stay pretty close to my old
Bimmer ex-buddies...I have a suggestion & that's to wait until 2004 for the next generation 5-series that will replace the current -and IMHO, aging) E39 platform which is very nice still, but...it's been around since 1996 in Europe, 1997 here in the US and aging...
Rumor has it that the replacement to the current E39 (Five-series) platform will be a tad bigger but a lot lighter -possibly 300-400 lighter which is good because the current 540 is a TANK at 3754 lbs.
With the lower weight, there will be an offering of a new 3.5 liter V8 (yes, an eight) with roughly 270 horses and a revised version of the current 4.4 liter (could be anywhere from 4.4 to 4.6 liters) that would yield ~340hp.
With the 400 lbs removed..you'll be looking at a 3300 lb car with a minimum 270 horses...even for the lowest-level of the V8 models...I say hang on to the Max a bit & wait for this one..

I am a former BMW fan myself.
But I belive BMW's are nevr going to be the great motor cars they once were.
Every redesign they tend to get motr complicated. more overpriced adn of lesser quality that the model that preceded it.
This trend has held for the last 3 generations of 7 series, the last 2 generations of 5 series.
Only the 3 series seems to not lose much, but then it wasn't on as hi a level quality wise as the 5 and 7 series used to be, so it had a lot less to lose.
I LOVE the great handling/steering of BMW's, but it should not be the ONLY consideration when buying a car even for enthusiats sucha s ourselves.
I dont think there is a Nissan/Infinti model out there, that is not so much more, than an equal price BMW.
