acceleration thud

I have a 2002 Maxima (automatic). When accelerating quickly from a stop, I often get a hard kick when the car moves from 1st gear to 2nd gear. Does anyone know why this happens, how to fix it, and/or if it causes damage to my car. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It could be the gears shifting, "quick locking torque converter" maybe... otherwise it should be smooth which means slippage...normal.

It does this only when you floor it or accelerate very quickly right? If so, it may just be the gears shifting from one gear to another, you're feeling the clutch in the Auto Tranny.
