do i need new coils?

i'm at 76000 miles now and i'm wondering if i need to replace my coils? is it something that needs to be done with age/use, or only if i've had problems as per the tsb?

also, if do get em, is it fairly simple to replace? i'm no mechanic but am reasonably good with tools.

If you arent knocking or pinging under heavy load or accelleration, and your gas mileage is good, and the engine's running smoothe I'd say no. Are you an early 2k?

Mine needed it at 25k per the TSB...was doing it exactly as the TSB described...and its going in next week for the fix.

thanks

i'm not sure if i'm pinging or knocking since i don't know what that feels like. gas mileage was never that great, but consistent at ~23 mpg.
my car's a june 2k.

Did you buy it brand new? Or with over 36k on it?...You would definitely hear it if it happened...Chances are if you bought it used with 30k or more on it they have already been replaced per the TSB...Specially if you hear no pinging or knocking when you floor it from a stop...

Those suckers are expensive too...

i bought it new with 12 miles on it.

so i don't need em due to mileage right? i'd love the save the money for something more useful.

I wouldnt say "due to mileage" especially cuz of the history of those coils from alot of other org' people...BUT if they arent pinging or knocking (you can EASILY hear it if you FLOOR it from a stop) your fine.

From what I've seen, I'd bet 60 to 70 per cent of us have had the problem. You might be one of the lucky ones...Just test it out by finding a good straight away with no traffic, stop, floor it for 2 to 4 seconds. If you hear no sounds like someones rattling an empty pepsi can with a rock in it...your fine. It only takes 2 to 4 seconds to hear it...you dont need to be goiong fast to test it.

I think you'd have heard it by now if they were bad.

If theyre not doing it I'd wait till 100k to replace them...when the plugs are due anyways.

It's very easy to change them. Almost like changing the spark plugs, but without actually changing the plugs

But if you have no problems - don't change them. You know, if it works fine - don't mess with it
