chop the wire off near the cigarette lighter adapter. ground one wire, hook the other wire up to a starter controlled power source in the headliner like the sunroof (only gets power when key is turned to the "On" position). If you remember the fuse rating for most of these radar detectors is 1A, so they don't draw too much power whatsoever. I noticed some new detectors come ready for hardwiring, but that is what i did to mine.

you cant do that to a passport 8500 due to the fact it has more then one wire for its remote thing. they sell a hardwire kit for $30 i think.

I have a BEL Vector LR, I finally hardwired it. I removed the clock on the dash tapped into the acc and the negative on the clock (there's a wiring diagram on the bottom). I used some nice double sided tape and presto! Looks great email me for a picture if you want. Good Luck!

8500 easy as pie

got my 8500 hardwired. they sell just the powercord to hardwire it for i think $10, but if you want the light up thing w/ the mute button it's $30. get the $10 cord...the detector'll mute itself after a few seconds so ain't much benefit in spending the extra $20.

I have an 8500 hardwired. Check http://www.5thgenmaximas.com/ under the How-To's area for info. on how to do this. I did mine slightly different, in that my "smartcord" (the $30 one) buttons I wedged into the space next to the mirror control, just remove the blank and insert smartcord. Looks nice, and you don't have to put velcro/screws/tape/etc. on top of the steering column, but you can still see the smartcord lights clearly.

I want to do it mysefl, but I am not sure if I want to pull my dash apart. Also, do you think the level you have it is low enough to get the best coverage. I am about to take a road trip from Dallas to Alabama and don't want to get a ticket or deal with the damn cord in the way.

To Maximadave ...

MaximaDave:

From your pic it looks like u hardwired a Bel980. I have the same detector and 2 questions for you...

(1) Does mounting it so high have any adverse effect - I was told that the blue band across the windshield top messes the detection range -- ur comments ?
(2)Anything different u did for the hardwiring - compared to the writeups provided ?

Thanks buddy !

Personally I wouldn't hardwire using the cig lighter adapter. The reason is that the cig adapter and the hardwire adapter usually have a transformer in them to allow the right amount of milliamps in the unit. By bypassing this you risk blowing up the unit. I don't want to take the risk of throwing my 400 dollar V1 in the garbage.

I wired my to my auto dim mirror power. I tried wiring it to the sunroof power but the resistance was to great and the sunroof wouldn't function. I like it this way because the detector is only on when the key is in the ON position.

Unfortunately, I don't have the autodimming mirror in the 2000SE. I did this on my old truck, but the stereo shop did it as a courtesy after dropping $2K.

BTW, I am an idiot because I was too lazy to pull all the equipment out before I traded the truck in.

It was a piece of cake. I used these instructions.

It is low enough for sure. There is no tint in the way and I am guessing that I get about 1/4 mile in range most of the time.

Here is my other thingy....

That pic was from my 2000 SE and I had no problems with range front and back. I used heavy duty velcro to mount it above the mirror. I wired it the same as the writeups here on the .orgy

I now have the same Bel 980 wired the same in my 2002 and with the window tint it has no affect on range at all. It even states this in the owners manual. Range is also great too on my 2002.

I dont know what kind of radar guns they use in your areas but laser guns are getting farily popular with the police here and it's recommended to get the detector as close to the front license plate as possible (since that's what they typically target) since the IR area typically doesnt get larger than 3 feet in diameter, having the detector up at the rv mirror may not pick any laser shots up!

Suction cups on the glass which work surprisingly well.

The "thingy" in the above pic was hot glued to the plastic side of a velcro strip which was then stuck to the steering wheel column.
