Ok- this is just a question of opinion and not to be 'searched' flamed?
The holidaze are coming and I wonder if I should upgrade the 00 headlights to the '02 HID's. No questions about looks, of course but I just wonder if its worth it. I live in NY #1 but my car is garaged (open lot) at night only. Do you think its worth it? Would you do it if it would be a gift? Thanks for your opinion.

A "gift"? A gift from who? The guy down the street from you who parks outside at night?

ASU174- Ok, you didnt understand my statement or I dont understand yours. I am getting the impression you think eyebrows should be raised here. let me clarify for you. I have the option to get HID's as a gift from my wife for the holidays. Instead of ties/clothes or other crap which I wont wear (hope she never logs on here) or care for, I plan on asking on her to get me a set of HID for my 00. I am gonna leave it as a misunderstanding but if you try something funny again.. I'd have to take your lunch money.

What a great line.

I too would like to know, should you try maybe some new PIA's or go hell bent and get HIDS? If we were to get upgraded bulbs which do you fellow org members recommend?

Thanks on the line compliment Black. Your questions were the same as mine. I wonder if I should just get some PIAA Xtremes bulbs or go out and spend a grand on new HID. Given I am living in NY, I wonder if I should risk it. If I catch someone ripping my HIDs I'll have to machete their hands and plead emotional disturbance!
Those HID's are irresistable though!

Do it right! Get the 2k2 HIDS or a HID kit. Don't even bother with the PIAAs! They burn out, every 4-6 months. PIAAs are bright, but not close to what a HID would give you.

Ok, I think I am going to ask her to get them for me. Good woman I am sure she will too. Now, one last question fellas. Since the car is SE '00 and if I upgrade to '02 HID's.. and got them stolen.. Insurance wont give me a hassle, right? I know this vary case by case but I just wonder for those that did it. What was the insurance factor?

Remember, you loose your high beams if you do an HID conversion in your stock housings. Most people say you wont need high beams after getting HIDs, but I don't buy that. I'd go for the 2K2 HIDs. They're sweeeeet!. By the way, I heard the "Cool Guys" had 2K2 HIDs going around for like 5-600 bucks. DOn't know for sure, but I'd look around.

call your ins company for coverage...mine needed proof of purchase (receipt) & pics of my car to cover them ...some might tack on a small fee for extra aftermarket coverage-- but your in NY, you definetly need to get that coverage if you dont want your money going bye-bye if they get stolen

I like them alot. the only thing I don't like is all the a##holes that flash me at night thinking I'm running my high beams, and yes they are aimed correctly! Rather than that the lighting is great!

Get Them

I would get them if I could afford them. Don't get a kit, get the OEM HID's. I would possibly take it to someone who does welding. Have them take a look at putting some sort of metal to keep them in. I don't know...I would go crazy if someone stole mine.

i am currently in the same situation. I am trying to decide whether to go with an HID kit or the 2k2 HIDS. I think im leaning towards the HID kit right now but those 2K2 lights look so tight on our cars!!!

You don't loose your high beams going with an HID conversion. Some kits you do and some kits you don't. There are single beam (low) kits and there are hi-low kits. Of course high-low kits do cost a pretty penny but that doesn't mean you can't have them.

Now as far as not needing high-beams with HIDs, I'm not the expert on that. I have heard that you don't but you will need to swap out the HID ballasts with stock H4's when you go for inspection. You need high-low to pass

Anyway I have gone through the same toss up, HID conversion or 2k2 HIDs. And I think my final decision will come down to that I feel conversion is the best way to go all around.. including for theft

I hope this helps.

I second that! Aside from how bright they are, they also look tight! My GF commented right away, saying that it looks much more aggressive. There is not a lot going on in the front of our 2k-2k1's, and the HIDS add a lot to it.

Getting them is one thing, in NYC keeping them is another.

If you want to get them a hold onto them, you had better research and see if you can get the 2K2 HIDs to work with your 2K housing. I know it would not look as nice but it would sure fool the thieves.

I definitely would get them based upon the fact that once you've had them you don't know how you've lived so long without them. As for the HID conversion, I don't even use my high beams (with the 02 HIDs), so if NY doesn't do an annual inspection for your cars that requires you to have them, then do the conversion. It's a much safer alternative as far as theft goes. However, if you live in a pretty low-crime neighborhood, and you keep your car garaged, then that should give you more of a piece of mind if you decide to get the 02s.

So I think definitely I'll buy them now. As far as security goes on my block its pretty safe since there is another '02 5th gen on my block (they are not org members, they are retired seniors with a nice GLE). My only real concerns are when I go to the metro station I park in the wide open lot so my wife can pick up the car when she gets out. Anywayz, I think I am gonna work real hard to find something to secure them. I'll call the insurance company today and ask them about that option. You guyz are great and thanks for all the help/info and sharing your experiences. I think the '02 look is the hottest thing.
