Starting Noise

Starting Noise
I get a Whoosh! sound coming from the driver side engine close to the firewall during recent cold starts. Could it be the starter? Any idea what types of re-occurring problems may be causing this sound? It turns over just fine, but the noise is very loud and unusual. Also, I am coming up on the end of my warranty. I have had the rotors replaced, the trans sensor and shift sensors all replaced under warranty. I am having the car brought in for a good once over and 30K service and have a good relationship with the service manager (beleive it or not). Any suggestions on what TSB's might be worth a once over? I am not having any strut noise and do not ordinarily look for problems, but the warrenty is almost up and one can't be too careful.

Ditto
Mike, i'm in the same boat. Mine starts fine, shoots up to 2k rpm's (or however high it goes), but makes that crazy noise. I have 48k miles and yup, it only does it on cold starts. lemme know what you find out.

Either of you guys find anything out about this? I have about 51K on my 2000 SE and it does the same exact thing. I read that relubing the starter gets rid of the problem. And obviuosly replacing it will do the same thing. Replacement is expensive, but I wold think it is laboorious to remove, relube and re-install as well.
Let me know if you find a resolution.
Thanks

I believe there was a thread on this not too long ago, but it was mostly 02/03 owners with the same problem--starting noise when starting in cold weather. The final consensus was that it's the belts, and as long as the car turns over fine, you shouldn't worry about it.

'Whoosh' sound or the rather normal
timing chain rattle that lasts for maybe a half-second or so? If it's the latter...all VQs do that ocassionally..the timing chain 'whiplashes' a bit until the tensioners get 'pumped up' with oil pressure.
Heck, my '97 did that ocassionally, my '01 ditto. Look at it as the price u pay for having 'forever lasting' chains instead of belts.

I started getting timing chain rattle when it started to get cold here. Now that it's full fledged cold here, it still happens, but not all the time.
My problem is every now and then it will rattle for like 5-10 seconds. Of course i can't reproduce it for my dealer. But it kinda annoys me.

I dunno.. but mine made this "woooonk!" noise last weekend.. it almost sounded like a horn. and there was a buzzer like feel too, definate high frequency vibration. My wife was like 'what was that?' I told her that was my new Lexus calling.. :/ unfortunately, that is some time off.
Gawd, I hope its the damn starter. it sounded like a spun a main bearing.. I was glad to hear that whoosh sound after that..

There's really nothing you can do about it. *IF* you were able to somehow reproduce it for your dealer, they would most likely tell you it was normal. From what i've heard, it is a normal occurrence. So we'll just bring this thread back up every winter.

yeah, I've dealt with this kind of thing before with them. They will want to keep the car.
Me: There's a problem starting in the morning when cold.
SM: Well, if you cant reproduce it warm, just leave it with us
next day...
me: so what did you guys find out.
SM: everything checked out.
me: what time did you start it?
SM: we were busy, we just started it a few mins ago
me: rrrrrrright, its noon... and about 50 degrees now.. tell me again why I needed to leave it?
SM: well, we'll keep it till tomorrow and try again.. but you'll need to bring the rental back today...
me: rrrrrrrright... forget it.

staring noise/problem
My 2000 SE (almost 50k miles) has been having a similar high pitched noise and rev up to 2xRPM, but mine is now at the mechanics because my car would rev up, but quickly rev down and stall out (even as I'm driving). They think it is a problem with the engine controller/computer. Anyone have a similar problem?? I love my car, but not when it acts up.
