Guys I have a question about brakes...Every time I get the speed really high up there, like 100 or over, the brakes grind TERRIBLY when trying to slow down. I know that's to be expected with that sort of friction, but can this be prevented by getting A/M brakes? Are stock brakes just not made to handle this sort of thing? Would A/M brakes work that much better?

the regular Opel Vectra GSi has 2.0 liter 4-cyl (which tops off at 145 mph), the GT has 2.5 liter V6, plus Twin Turbo running in at 320 BHP, it's a special edition celebrating Opel's victory in the BTCC.

Fastest
Fastest = 140 (for about 2 sec)
Car= 2001 Camaro SS
Age = 30
Fastest in Max = 110 (get this, my girlfriend driving, she likes speed)
Of course, this poll does not take into account the time I was on the back of my buddies ZX3 crotch rocket. He asked me if I wanted a ride, I had had a couple of beers so thought, sure. He rides dirt bikes for a living so I should have taken that into consideration before agreeing (those guys are nuts). He puts me on the back of this thing and hit's around 160+ in a matter of seconds. And this was not on a highway. It was on Ben White East (for anyone in Austin) which is a 3 lane road with lights about every 1/2 to 1 mile. I have not gotten on a mortocycle since.

I mean I have done about 80mph based on the speedo in the snow in my old Explorer Sport, when i was only going about 4 mph, but why cant this guy have done 154?

yeah man... this i dont get either... wen i had my tl on the tl forum someone said the same thing that u said... something about speedometer calibiration or something... but someother guy proved thim wrong... all i know is that i saw my needle at 180 degrees... never seenn that in person before... i was scared ****less but i was racing a mazda millenia s and i ripped him after 120 and i just kept going... whether or not i hit 154 i dont know but thats wat i saw.... and another thing is taht with the max it takes longer than the tl to hit 120.... can u explain y... it has the same power basically and 4 gears... the dam max wont redline maybe thats y... with the triptronic tranny i used to redline every gear to 7000..

1) 136 mph
2) 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass
3) 20 ( 15 Yrs ago )
4) 115 mph
Shortly after passing a Mustang @ 125 mph I blew my upper water hose.
I was actually racing a '71 Nova at the time. The Mustang just happened to be on the road.
A little duct tape and I was on my way home.
I only have not maxxed out my Max primarily due to age.
I still love to drive fast. I just do not need to go 125+.

The best way to test top speed is with timing lights over a known distance. Everybody on the forum ****s on Car and Driver for their acceleration run numbers, but they do test top speed with timing lights and I take their top speed numbers to be accurate. BTW, C&D states the top speed of the 3.2TL-S to be 147 mph, which has 35 more hp than the normal TL. The difference between 154 mph and 147 mph is huge. The 7 mph difference is a lot bigger at high speed than 7 mph would be at 60 because the aerodynamic drag curve is logarithmic.
To top it all off, most newer cars are governor limited to a preset top speed which is determined by the manufacturer usually on the basis of tire speed ratings or general handling dynmaics.
Take all top speed claims with a grain of salt and don't let the GM sales guy tell you a Vette can go 200 mph (unless its from Lingenfelter or Callaway).

Speedometers are calibrated to be fairly accurate at normal driving speeds, but even, for instance, at speeds around 60 mph there can be up to a few percent in speedometer error. And, just because the speedo error might be 2% at 60, the error is not linear. At 150 mph, the error could be as great as 10%(if not higer).

My top speed
151 miles per hour, for about 20 minutes. Here's the funny part - it was in my 1975 Dodge Dart Sport 360. Why only 20 minutes? Thew a rod, limped about 60 miles home doing 30.
After I rebuilt her, just couldn't bear to bring her up to that speed again. Mainly because it scared the crap out of me...the car was so light that the front literally left the ground more than once.

I was racing a Sentra SE-R who was a total sleeper.. I was pulling on him hard until the dam fuelcut off. That's how I found out I had a speed limiter...
