Yet another Nissan Service sucks post

I went to Sheehy in Manassas, VA. I asked how much they would charge to advance my timing 2 degrees. Service guy said I'll void your warranty because it'll kill your engine. I politely said, "no it will not kill the engine. Several people I with 2k2 Maximas have done this with great success." He called a tech over and the tech said, "you'll waste gas". I said, "goodbye". Why must they treat us like dirt?

I don't think that's horrible service...they were just trying to let you know the "cons" of doing it, while they figured you knew the "pros"...It's not like they refused to do it...or did they? That would be stupid, because then they are losing business...

If you didn't want a 6speed, and you like good service, why didn't you get an I35? Just a thought...

That isn't "good" service, but I wouldn't describe it as being treated like dirt...

my 2 cents...

I guess it's hard when your trying to convey what happened in words. As soon as I asked at least 5 people popped up and I felt as if everyone was taking their poke at me. They were talking down at me and being very sarcastic while doing so. They did say they would not do it. I went to this dealership to buy my Maxima. My sales experience should've told me not to come back. I told them that I needed $4200 for my 98 Taurus. The salesmen went away and came back and said, "the most I can give you for your car is $3500 and the price that your asking for our car". I said, "I need $4200 for my car". The general manager then came out and rather rudely said, I don't think we can make a deal Mr. Bunner and I don't want to waster your time. We have other cars that may be more in you financial price range." While I was dressed in Jeans, they had no idea that my wife and my salary totals $145,000 yearly. I went to another dealership and they had no problem giving me what I wanted for both cars.

write Nissan about it...seriously...I look young, and my wife and I make just over $100,000 a year, we always get treated like we can't afford anything...hell, I'm 27 and she is 26...so they don't think we can afford anything...

however, the BMW dealer treated me with great respect here in KC...Baron BMW....better car...better service....

now I know what you mean...by them talking down to you, I get in there face when they do that with me, not physically threatening..just verbally attacking...I don't put up with it...

I wouldln't go back to the place to have anything done...but I would go give them my two cents...

I used to sell Nissans..(my first job out of the Marine Corps) and when I got a more stable income from another job, I quit and a few days later I called them up, I wanted a brand new (at the time) 1998 Sentra SE (sr20de) w close ratio 5 speed....

my old boss told me to call back monday....they were busy...so I drove an hour north to another dealer, and bought a black one...Monday I showed up after I got off work from my new job, and parked my new Sentra SE by the showroom...walked in and gave him a piece...it was great...

Most mechanics, service techs, and customer service reps are basically regurgitating knowledge out of a book. It seems that no one nowadays has an intimate understanding of how or why things work. It’s very frustrating when you want to do something that is not “written down in the book” – it seems that nobody can help you.

As with most of the .Org, nothing people love more than to flame other people for what they consider wrong. Be it spending too much money for something, too many watts in a stereo system, rims that are too big, etc. I’m sure that the response from the people at the dealership was no different. It’s sad, but a light bulb goes off in peoples’ heads when they hear something that they don’t understand – “Oh, I can tell this guy he is an idiot!”

In this day and age people learn enough to get by and don’t seem to care about what they do for a living. I haven’t seen anyone on the board that is a Nissan service tech. I think it would be in Nissan’s best interest to require people to keep an eye on the internet to see what the complaints are about their product / service in hopes to keep repeat customers.

The correct way of handling that would be to ask you why you wanted to do it. Perhaps if they took the time to understand the reason they could have made you a happy customer. It is possible that they are forbidden from doing such a modification in which case “I’m sorry sir, but we are prohibited from doing that modification because of reason x….” would have been appropriate.

Customer Service seems to be a lost art. It started with the American cars, now Japanese. I guess the other option is to spend $40,000 on a European car. If I were you I would find a mechanic who could do the timing advance for you and understands why you would want to do it. Don’t give Nissan any reason to deny you service

I think it probably didn't have much to do with jeans. I wear jeans 99% of the time. Nobody treats me like that, ever. Especially if I'm on a new car lot. I was just at a BMW dealer yesterday in a tshirt and gym pants (stopped on my way to the gym.)

If someone's that judgmental you need to find another dealer. And I'd let the sales manager at that dealership know about the experience. Great way to lose sales.

Well, technically, they are indeed doing a

non-standard 'mod'...some dealers frown on these things, some are more performance-minded...I had no issues when I took mine in to do the same thing, but then again, I always tip my service advisor when taking my car in for anything, I'm sure that helps too...

How much do you tip? I am paying monthly to get free service, I don't feel right giving someone money to do their job. Unless they work on tips like a waiter.

My Dad who has been a successful stock broker for over 25 years always tells me that the people dressed ragged are always the wealthiest. I guess the dealerships don't realize that when people want to get a good deal on something they don't want the salesman to know that they have money to spare.

i have to agree with that. my uncle makes 3+ million dollars a year and he hardly ever wears anything except sweat pants and a sweat shirt.

to the original topic, i feel like there isnt a decent Nissan dealer anywhere in Northern VA. Sounds like Sheehy sucks. Rosenthal is quite possibly the worst dealership on the planet (though, my servicew guy there seem to be pretty cool) i guess its mostly their sales department that sucks.

thankfully i go to school in harrisonburg and Harrisonburg Nissan is full of small town folk who are eager to help out their customers. the guy who sold me my car used to be a paster at a church. not your typical salesman.

service

It's always hard to communicate completely within email/postings. It is annoying to get jerked around by the service manager/technicians. However, I often know this is going to happen before I even try so I've learned to expect it. In fairness to Service Managers they don't want to do things that potentially open them up. Your best bet is to call up the service department, explain that you have a very technical question and see if there is a service manager who is willing to either talk to you or get a technician to talk to you. Then cross your fingers when you explain what you want. Still no guarantees. Service departments are not our private mechanics. Some are more open than others.

Similar story for sales people. These guys are only willing to go so far. I believe the comment about "your financial price range" was intended to tell you that there was no point in a further discussion. Your posting said that the sales manager said it rudely, yet the words you wrote indicate someone who was at least trying to be diplomatic "I don't want to waste your time", etc. Again, knowing that email rarely communicates meaning well I believe you felt rudely dealt with. The best answer to this kind of treament is to go elsewhere. Money talks.

I hope this helps.

oh yeah and another story about Rosenthal Nissan salespeople...

when i was in there looking to get a 2002 we were doing our best to get the price down but they wouldnt go below $30,500 BEFORE Tax and Title. we kept trying and finally we said we werent interested. the sales manager came over and said "Mr Newman, to be honest, i am glad you arent buying this car at this price. we could sell this car for $33,000 or $34,000 all day long". that was the last straw. i doubt ill even try to buy anything from them again.

Most of them are smart enough to not judge the book by the cover. I am always casually dressed when I hit a dealership and I've never felt that anyone had prejudged my financial condition.

Besides, someone who's blowing money on their clothes often has less cash than one who does not. Like how a lot of dudes with really sweet cars are f*cking broke.

sounds like these guys are just jerks. i'd imagine eventually the market will speak and they'll either fire some of these guys or go out of business.
