You need to loosen the idler...you're see a brass colored bolt/nut looking thing right next to the engine (left side of the car if you're looking at your car from the front), pointing straight downwards, right over the idler. Loosen it and the belt can then be slipped off.

I would take some pictures...but it's too wet and cold outside...

Hope that helped...

Thank you it did help, but what about the power steering belt? How do you loosen that one?

Can anyone else help out? I'm about to order a set as well and would like to do this myself. Nissan is charging $149.00 to replace the 3 accessory belts and I think that's too much. My car sounds like a POS with all this squealing going on it's driving me mad.

Y2K Max Luv....how much did you spend on the belts and how long did it take to get to you?

How come Chilton's never made a book for the 5th Gen?

The total was $21.70 plus shipping from Dave B. They took 3 days to arrive.

I paid $28.10 shipped from JR Nissan, 2 days.

The weird thing is that Nissan Service quoted me $149 to install 3 belts but JR Nissan Parts stated that it's only 2 belts. Can someone clarfy how many accessory belts we have?

I wasn’t referring to his user name, I was referring to his real name or should I have put David B.

I am not sure if this step is the same for NA....

but for SC, I have to loose the nut that holds the tensioner pulley and then I can loose the tensioner adjuster. If the nut is not loosen first, you will snap the tensioner adjuster.

again....this is for SC'ed vehicles.

make sure you have tensioned and aligned the belt properly....dont miss a rib.

as far as belts go im 99.999% sure there are only 2, not 3, main drive belt and a power steering belt. For those of you who have squeeling belts though try tightening them (loosen nut on bottom and then use a wrench to tighten on the nipple thingy on top next to engine)

My local Nissan place said ~14-16 for the main drive belt but its on back order so i might give daveb a call, btw does he make commission cause I always call and bother him and if its no diff. to him maybe I should just go to nissan?

Belt replacement

Hello I just did a belt replacement on a 1996 nissan maxima. I can tell you that you will need to loosen the belt tensioner to the left of the engine to get off the first set of belts. to get the belts positioned to the rear, take off the passenger side front tire (always use jack stands!) and get down and look at the space between the inner wheel well wall and the engine, you will see a bolt positioned on a block of metal, (please note there are two like this one on top to loosen the rear belt and one towards the bottom of the car's chassis). You should see what I am talking about once you get under the car. Just a word to the wise when loosening the tensioner nut towards the top (next to the engine) for the front belts, loosen the opposite of of how you think you would, hence (righty tighty, lefty loosy) is reversed, so to loosen turn to the right. I snaped an old tensioner because I was unaware of this fact. I will try and get you a couple of pictures and a small tutorial to help you out.

i am positive that there are only 2 belts. i changed mine about a year ago so i can't remember exact steps, but i do remember that the belt further back is a pain to replace. you have to take your wheel off b/c there isn't enough clearance.

I hope this will help

It's only 2 belts as far as i know. Because of where the bolts are in the car it makes it difficult, esp the PS tensioner. Its a real PITA. I find taking off the passenger front wheel and lining helps.

1.see the idler pulley, rightmost black one you have to loosen the nut at the center and the nut attached via a rod above it to loosen the S belt

2.see the leftmost pulley, you have to get at the assembly to the left of it for the power steering pulley & belt to loosen.

yes the... the bolt that goes down from the hood puts the tension on, but the bolt in the center of the pulley itself LOCKS it in place... unscrew the bolt in the center of the pulley (metal wheel) THEN turn the hexagonal nut near the top of the engine to release the belt.

Only 2 belts... never changed the other one, but the squeeling may not be from the belts.... if it shows up only when it gets wet an a momentary loss of steering power then it may be the belts... but it may be the pulley itself... the bearings may be bad.. mine squeaks too, but my belts are fine

When I replaced mine.

1. Grab the wrong set of tools.

2. Make sure your set of tools does not include open ended wrenches or flat wrenches.

3. Do your repair work on a Sunday when everything is closed.

4. Start with the tensioner - there's two bolts - the idler pully bolt and the and the tensioner bolt (facing downward).

5. Try and reach the idler pully bolt with a socket wrench - can't do it.

6. Forget the idler pully and go right to the top tensioner bolt - "hey, it moves!!!"

7. Break the tensioner bolt and yell "OH ****" really loud so your wife and neighbors come out of there houses.

8. Realize now that you have to get this thing out no matter what!

9. Bang on the pully and belt with a socket exstension and a hammer until the pully moves up enough to get at the three bolts that hold the idles pulley in place.

10. Remove the idler pulley and call Auto Zone, NAPA, Checker and realize that the part isn't available.

11. Call your Boss that Sunday and tell him you'll be late for work on Monday because you're a dumb a$$.

12. Say to yourself - "Well I better get the other belt off"

13. With a little more patience than the previous belt you succesfully remove it and install the new belt.

14. Leave your car on jackstands over night.

15. Next morning at 7:00 - call your Boss again and make sure he got the message.

16. Call the local Nissan Dealership and have them hold the pulley.

17. Go to Auto Zone and buy a Metric Set of wrenches to fit between the wheel well and Pully - get the longer ones.

18. Go to Nissan and spend $60.00 and swallow some pride.

19. Go home and realize how easy it is to install $20'ers worth of belts if only you had the correct tools and patience.

Ollie that is so funny but so pissing me off right now.

I have been searching all over and see many others who have had problems like me replacing the power steering belt.

No one seems to have a helpfull answer, Mostly just a bunch of *******es saying to buy a manual.

I have been under and over the Maxima for many hours today even removing the adjuster on the PS pump but it doesn't want to move much even with a prybar.

I'm going to have to call into work in the morning since driving without the belt is impossible. Hopefully I can figure something out in the morning.

OK, this is truly the toughest mod I have ever done on my max (new pulley/new belts). I broke the tensioner bolt also, but here is how you do it correctly. The tensioner process has been adequately described above, but the PS belt is extremely difficult. All I remember is that there is a bolt behind (port side) of the pulley. It feels like it is in the center of the engine. You have to stick your arm up there to find it and it is very hard to reach. You will need to take off the wheel and well liner. My advice is to get one of those guides from autozone for the 2k max. That is what I did and I eventually got it. PM me if you have any questions, but as you can see I don't remember it in great detail as it was 3 years ago.

The Power Steering Belt Is Simple To Do, Just Kinda A Pain In The A**, From The Passengers Side Wheel Well You Have To Reach Up Behind The Pump To Losen The Bolt That Holds The Pump On To The Engine Block. Next You Have To Losen The Brass Bolt Just Behind The Pully, Then Cranking On The Bolt That Comes Thru That, That Will Drop The Power Steering Pump...requires Patients...small Hands Would Help Too

And....the only real way to reach the bolt behind the pump is between the exhaust manifold pipes

Well, my dad came by and we worked since 8:00 this morning. It's finally back running. The tentioner on the PS pump had some messed up threads on it and I ended up pulling it completely off. The pump still wouldn't budge.

I ended up removing the strap that is near the top and back of the motor that holds the hose to the pump. Then it moved freely. I went to unscrew the tentioner bolt from the block and it snapped in two. Aperently the bolt was bent and that's what kept it from moving.

We headed to the local dealership and of course the part was not in stock anywhere in the area but he did "give" me a bolt long enough that I had to fab into a new tentioner bolt.

After a few hours of busting up knuckles and wearing out my fingers we were able to get it back in place. What a PITA that was.

Thanks for those that did offer help.

Is the PS belt that much a pain that it is just worth it to pay a mechanic to put it on the lift and do it for ya? I replace the alternator belt, and stopped short of the PS belt and need to get that done, but man, seems difficult and then you all make a day of doing it, so is it worth just paying to get it done since it's not something you do that often?

Feedback, please.
