oil level

Does the oil level on the dip stick need to be near the upper (H) end of the scale to be considered normal?

Ever since I bought my 03 SE, the engine oil level has always been around 1/4 or 1/2 above the lower (L) scale and I have taken the car to the dealer for oil changes 3 times now. Is 1/4 or 1/2 oil level above the lower scale normal?

When checking the oil, I usually only wait about 5 mins. or so after I shut off the car so I guess I should wait at least 10 mins. but will this make a big difference?

Thanks,

I think that as long as you are in the crosshatched area between L and H then you are alright. You could add a little oil if it makes you feel more comfortable. When I do my oil changes, I add 4 1/4 quarts with a new oil filter.

The longer you wait when you shut off your car, then more oil drains back into the oil pan, so the reading will be more accurate.

I usually check in the morning - after the car has stayed over-night. Get it pretty close to the H mark.

Maximas should take the award for the "Worst design - Oil Dipstick Dept."

It is tough as is to get an accurate reading !

My wife's honda has much much better dipsticks - atleast !

Thanks for the replys...I think I feel more comfortable now about the oil level in my car....I guess I felt uncomfortable about it cuz I used to own a Ford Taurus and the dipstick used to always read close to the "H".

And I can't agree more, the dipstick design in the Max is the absolute worst!!
