Well now you've got me on that one, ppetruccelli. How can a dirty plug make a coil crap out? And why did my coils go bad with only 11K on my plugs?

Well, I don't know how much truth there is to the statement that the service guy made to me, but it seems to work. I figure that the cleaner a plug is, the less resistance is produced at the electrode at the end of the plug. A believe that a cleaner spark creates a lighter on the coil, therefore making it work less and longer.

its basically like changing your spark plugs you unbolt the coil unsnap the green clip Pull out the coil and pop the new one in make sure its snug on the spark plug, then clip the new one with that green clip then bolt it on and BAMM

PS. For those who need COILS i can get them for 250 shipped to your door

Canadian Tire. But, I think EQUUS is a huge company and their products are available anywhere in the States. Try Wal-Mart.

Had all 6 coils replaced at 36k after coming in to find out why check engine soon light was on. Dealer agreed to cover after my complaining. Car was just out of warranty.
At 47k I was driving down state and engine died. Had it towed to dealer who found #2 coil melted. Dealer said it was out of service warranty and I had to pay $230 plus tow charge of $100.
Of course dealer said he had never seen this happen before.

By the way, ppetruccelli, I'm not quite sure what to make of the argument that a clean plug will put less stress on a coil than a dirty plug. All I can tell you is that all of the plugs in my 2KSE were clean at 11K miles when the coils had to be replaced.

Some might argue that warped rotors are the greatest haunting problem of the Gen 5 Maxima, ppetruccelli. But I appreciate your sentiment nonetheless.

Frustrated with Nissan

I have pursued this for some time. I had the same problem just when I got off warrantly around a month ago. I have just 24000 miles on my 2k maxima. I bought it brand new and have serviced it at the same dealer since then.
Nissan initially promised to repair it free of cost but then after 3 days or so declined. Finally fed up of this I paid and got this done. I tried reaching senior execs at Nissan but its all in vain. The customer service guys are really smart at passing the bucket between each other.
I have signed your petition.
I too had drafted my case but after seeing Nissan's reaction to all this... simply didn't feel like it made sense to break my head against a brick wall. Anyways let us know how we can help.
Really...... I am considering getting rid of the car.
Pari.

Well I guess that's what's wrong with my car now. But I can't complain as much since I have 94k miles on it. My SES light has been on and off so much I just ignore it now. Nissan doesn't help either since the last time they checked the car they said " we're not sure why the light is on, but it'll cost $80 to turn it off." F*CK THAT!

229WHP NA on 70K mile OE coils, with lots of hacking to em.. removed alot of times, messing with indexing plugs, diff plug ranges etc... but I do have a small miss sometimes when sitting at the light. I will try to swap some coils soon. Currently they where on back order. If anything I ditch those coils and use diff ones off Splitfire Japan for the Cedric

I'd say, neglecting the SES light will not lead to anything good in a long run. Being ON, the light indicates that something is not right inside of the engine+emission systems. If that's a simple misfire (like it was in my case) due to a faulty ignition coil, it is much cheaper to replace that coil rather than deal with dead catalytic converter a year later. My advice, look into it and fix it as soon as you can. Your Maxima will say "thank you" to you.

Up to 6? You may not need to replace all 6... I have just replaced one that was bad, and the car has been running great ever since, not a slightest sign of a misfire...

The idea is that eventually, they will all go bad anyway. The new coils you purchase are an updated model AFAIK...?

After installing new coil, should the SES light remain on until turned off, or should the computer recognize that the coil has been replaced and turn off within a few minutes? I'm curious because after replacing a coil, the SES light remained on and Autozone turned it off. Of course with the light still on, the same code was thrown even with the new coil. So, should the light be turned off manually?

I'm doing all 6 for my friend and myself. Its like doing injectors on a 1st gen VQ30 the NON K motor, its better to do all 6 than to do just 1 or 2. I don't like doing the job 10 times. I have the skills to diagnose coil problems- I have my own Oscope, but I just want all new parts. I'm a fantatic about the condition of my car.

Even if you buy the coils from the dealer, you still can save the $80 on the labor by replacing them by yourself...

My original post I said no, but apparently the dealer just said that I do. So, YES!

Autozone sells WELLS coils for $50 pop - can anybody confirm that this is the brand name Nissan uses for OEM coils?

Also, my problem is manifesting itself only in serious knocking which is infrequent but sometmies quite loud. The service tech at nissan said that it won't cause damage if I leave this, since the sound is the only concern of mine, unless this gets much worse. Is that true? Can the knocking/valvetapping cause problems for me down the road?

Here's my story. I have a 2000 Maxima SE and threw a code 2 weeks ago on a trip. Drove just fine about 300 miles back home. Took it to the dealer and they said 750 dollars to replace all 6 coils just like everyone else here. I flipped out when I heard this. They told me they could not figure out which one was misfiring and that the "book" says to change all 6. I said to just reset the light and I'll see how long it takes to do it again. I paid the 79 dollars to "diagnose" and came back and started looking at the internet for help. I had no idea about this being such a common problem.

Your forum proved priceless!!! I got nissan consumer affairs number from an earlier post and pleaded my case with them. Long story short, I just picked up my car from the dealership and only had to pay 100 dollars and the rest was paid by Nissan. Total out of pocket was 179. 100 today plus the original 79 for diagnosis.

I too had only 36,800 miles on the car and it was 5 months out of 36months. I simply did everythig that was posted within this forum.

Call the customer relations number
Be Polite
Explain your displeasure
Be Polite
Explain that you know this problem is KNOWN by Nissan and what the TSB is.
Be Polite
If you own previous Nissan cars as I have let them know about it. I have had 5 other Nissans in the past 12 years.
They'll call the dealership and you should hear back in 2 days.

It really is Nissans call and when you call write down the name of the person on the other end. Use his/her name throughout the conversation, believe me it really helps.

Good luck to everyone and thanks for all the help.

2 months past my warranty (@ 51000km / 31500miles) and the coils light up my SES so I had to pay for the repair. Dealer recommended replacing all 6. Here's what it cost (hope this information helps those figuring out how much it'll hit their wallets).

Computer Analysis = $90 CDN / $68 USD
Labour = $90 CDN / $68 USD
3 x 2Y000 Coils ($32.24 CDN each) = $97 CDN / $73 USD
3 x 2Y005 Coils ($31.65 CDN each) = $95 CDN / $72 USD
Tax (GST/PST) = $54 CDN / $41 USD

TOTAL = $425 CDN / $324 USD

Guess it could've been much worse. The coils used to sell for about $135 CDN each, but had recently been reduced to $32 CDN. That would've set me back about $1130 CDN / $850 USD.

This guy's talking $35 CDN/coil. That would be even less than $35 USD per coil. That is DIRT CHEAP.

I plan on buying my coils from Dave soon, but if Nissan just did a price slash on their coils... umm...

Sure can... The Wells coils were exactly the same Hansin coils I pulled out of my Maxima, same japanese model numbers and everything. Wells only packages them. I think they are still 1st gen coils but I cannot tell for sure. I have never seen the Nissan "upgraded" coils.

BTW - Mine didn't go out until 134k miles, about 2 months ago, I am the original owner and I think I have one of the earliest Max's at 05/99 production date.

Was there a grey or white sticker on the top of the new coils? If so, it's the updated design.

Are you sure the grey sticker means it's an updated design? The original coils in my 2K (04/00) has grey circles and two coils went out at 46K miles. If the grey sticker means "new and improved", there's not much of an improvement.

Yes!!! There was... It was either white or blue, not grey (I think blue), when all the ice gets off my hood I will pull off the front cover and check. I'm glad someone finally answered this. I was nervous, because the OEM part number from Hansin was the exact same as the originals.

If that is the case then the Wells coils are definately the way to go, IMHO.

Thanks Matto!
