I have a 2000 SE 5 speed that got the dreaded code at 60k miles. I decided to call up Dave B and got 6 new coils for about $380 shipped. I also put in 6 new NGK Iridium plus. I have never even changed the oil myself on a car but I decided to give this project a shot. By reading up on the helpful "how to" guides on the forum and it was not bad at all. I borrowed my uncles tools and had him standing over my shoulder while I worked and the whole job took less than a hour. The new coils and plugs made a huge difference. Unless you are completely risk adverse, I would recommend doing you homework and replacing the coils yourself.

I ordered some coils directly from a parts dealer. They have eBay auctions citing NEW OEM Coils parts 22448-2Y005 & 22448-2Y000.

The coils came unboxed w/ the following part numbers:

22448-2Y007 (3)
22448-2Y001 (1) rear
22448-2Y010 (2) rear

The guy said that they get them direct from the mfg in Japan and that's why they were not boxed in Nissan parts boxes. He indicated that the different suffixes were "foreign" parts numbers - but the same part in structure.

I'm sending them back, but what do you folks think???

Is there data supporting ignition coils failing on 5.5 as well? i.e. 2003 maxima?

I have a slight vibration on idle and it is possible one or more of my coils are on the way out. No codes yet.

I got the dreadded P1320 two weeks ago I took it to the dealer and they recomended I change the wiring harness and coils #1,2,3. They wanted $2000 for the wiring harness and about $200 per coil. I told them I had to wait. My car drives normal at times and them out of the blue it missfires. Do I really need to replace the wiring harness or is this how defective coils act?
Thanks

My car is out of warranty, but I got the TSB if anyone needs it. along with instructions on how to change the coils all from the forum.

Well I went to AutoZone first and they told me the front coils were 69.99 and the rear were 65.99 and that they were back ordered and I would get them in a week, so I went to Kragen and They told me that they were 105.00 for the front and 85.00 for the rear. So I called Dave B (my first time calling him) and I got all six shipped yesterday for 400 and I got them today at 11am changed them already and the car feels great but will keep you posted.

Thanks Dave

5.5 gen coils in 5 gen?

Will 5.5 gen coils work in 5 gen. My 2000 SES light poped up with 112k on the way to work. Autozone checked and said P1320, I knew it had to be the coils. I can get all 6 coils at a junkyard from a totaled 350Z, will these coils work? Thanks guys!

I just swapped out 6 Ignition coils on my 1999 Maxima SE after being advise by mechanic I needed all 6 done and it would cost 9 plus bills (way to much) I got a set of six Standard brand from RockAuto at a reasonable price. While I notice an improvement in power, I still get the misfires with the associated and Ignition and misfire codes. It seems everyone else here had great luck replacing bad with new and being good immediately. Anyone know anything about the "Standard" brand coils?? Should I have avoided them?? Thanks

i had to replace my sparkplugs...i should write a letter so they recall them
i had to replace my brakepads...i should write a letter so they recall them

"wear items" go bad and have to be replaced. why do people think things should last forever...and if they dont, they are getting screwed

Does anybody know if there is a TSB out for 2002s regarding coil failure? Sorry to repost this if its been asked already. I didn't really feel like reading through all 17 pages of this thread and I searched on google and the TSB section and couldn't find anything regarding 2k2s. I went to Autozone today to run the diagnostic and got the P0300 code for multiple misfires. The SES light and engine unbalance came about 2 days ago. My 2k2 SE only has 45k miles on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

ignition coils are not "wear items" and should not fail under any circumstances, especially on a <6 year old car. they absolutely should last the life of the vehicle.

a recall should have been issued. Saab had a similar problem with it's direct ignition cassettes on the 9-5 V6. they replaced them free of charge up to 100k miles, no questions asked.

Hey all. This is my first post here, and I have found it to be a tremendous resource for some one like me that isn't what you would call a gear head. I've got a 2000 Maxima GLE and was told when I SES light came on that the ignition coils had to be replaced. Got the coils from Dave B. (about $380, great guy and shipped them quickly), and went and got some NGK Iridium plugs. A good friend of mine owns a shop, and initially said I could do the front 3 myself, but that they would have to do the rear 3 because there was an A/C line that had to be moved necessatating draining the system, along with a bunch of other stuff. I did the front three myself and it was a piece of cake, but on checking out the back three, it indeed looked like there was an A/C line that would have to be moved before those rear coils could come out. After finishing with the front three, I started the car, and it still ran rough, and hesitated when I stepped on the gas (not to mention choking and sputtering before actually accelerating). After perusing these boards at great length, as well as looking up a number of other resources, I couldn't find any other case like mine that was mentioned. I trust my buddy to not screw me over, but am I missing something? Any advice any one can offer would be greatly appreciated. By the way, this is my first Nissan (I was a Honda guy for a long time, but couldn't fit in the 2000 Accord, and the Maxima offered more room). I bought from a dealer in July of '05 and the car had 94,000 miles on it. It now has a 143,000 miles on it (I'm in sales and drive a great deal), and have had nothing but trouble with this car. I really do appreciate having a great resource like this site to refer to, though. The few people I've had interaction with through this site have been incredibly helpful. Not crazy about Nissan, but this site and the people on it are top notch. Thanks!

You shouldn't have to move the AC line. The back three are kinda a pain, but you'll just be in some uncomfortable positions trying to get to them. Get a woble extension and you should be able to do them in a few hours.

It is strange that you are hesitating and stumbling. I would replace the back three before you do any other diagnostics. I'd also make sure you have the front three connected properly. Other people can probably help you with further diagnostics if you still have trouble after the back three are replaced, but I would guess perhaps the MAF?

Himitzu?

Has anybody ever used Himitzu coils? They are supposed to be direct replacements (though they have an A at the end of the part number), and Rock Auto has them for $37. Most other brands seem to be in the $50-$70 range. I'm going to have to change them out on my 2000 soon, but was just wondering if anybody has ever heard of this brand.

Aafes charges $800 for those of you that are military. The Fort Carson Shop did it quick. Colorado Springs Nissan said its not a recall or TSB item.

Has anybody run into problems installing the coils? Yesterday, I put in a new number 6 coil and changed the sparkplug, and for some reason now my car wont turnover, because it's not getting any spark? Any help would be much appreciated.

So far I tried disconnecting the battery, swapping back the old sparkplug, but to no avail.

Not sure here....may be the obvious, but be sure you connected the electrical back up to the coil and it "popped" closed onto the coil. New coil have the grey dot??? New coil defective?? Does the car crank AT ALL?? but just won't start?

Yea, i made sure that the coil was hooked up properly, I would imagine that wouldn't make much of a difference though, since the car started with ignition coil out. The car does want to start it just wont fire up, which is what leads me to beleive that the car just isnt getting spark for some reason.

After work today I am going to continue working on it, I'll keep you posted.

I have the dreaded coil problem. Went to autozone and the tester said cylinder 2 was the problem. I'm definetly not a car whiz BUT from what I've read, one set of these coils is doable for someone who knows how to work a screwdriver (I can do that) and one set is more difficult. So - what do you guys think? Is cylinder 2 among the "easy" set and I should try just that or try and find the whole set of 6 and have someone else do it for me. I hate to pay extra $$ if it is not necessary.

All you need is a spark plug socket and a extension and about 45 mins.
The back is difficult to reach without an extension

Cylinder 1,3,5 are rears; 2,4,6 are fronts. Fronts are so easy...easier than oil changes. Just read the posts on swapping them out...I think there is a sticky...you put some special dielectric grease on the new coils. Really easy. Cost was $65 each from Dave B last yr when I got mine. IF you buy 1 or more, buy atleast 1 of the fronts and one of the rear styles since/when a rear one goes you'll atleast have that style ( you need 6 coils; one design is frts and one design is the rears)

As long as ya got std sockets and extensions you'll be fine to DIY. Rears take LOTS of patience and getting fingers into places they won't fit, but it can be done and I have had mine off twice. Cyl #5 is driver side rear and it is the worst of the 6 coils to do, atleast for me. When you do the rears, replace the plugs so ya don't have to do it all over again at a later time for the plugs.

Thanks for the reponse, guys and to everyone in the older posts. I sent Dave B. an email but never got back within the day and the car was running real rough so just went to autozone and got the one coil for $70. Replaced it very easily (and I know next to nothing about cars) with the tips here and it runs fine. The tcs and slip light are gone but service engine soon light still on - I assume that either needs reset or will go off. Very relieved to have a normal running car again for NOW - with only 1/6 of the coils replaced I'm not overly confident after reading.

I also have a 2000 Maxima with coil problems. I've read where people have done the labor themselves, and wondered if someone could provide a link with instructions. I know VERY little about cars, but I've heard that changing the coils is very easy and I'd like to give it a shot.

So... I would appreciate a link to instructions. Thanks.

I have an '02 that is throwing the P0300 SES code. From what I read on here, it is probably the coilpacks. I had to replace one a long time ago but now that the car has 100k on it I decided to just order 6 and replace them all since I am unable to track down exactly which one is bad and they are probably all on their way out anyway...The car seems to run strong but I'd like to get rid of the friggin SES.
I found 6 on ebay for ~$230 w/ free shipping, I hope these work out okay They should arrive sometime next week, i'll let you guys know how it works out.

is there anyone on this board that sells these coils because I really don't want to spend $450-500 for a set of 6 from Autozone??

Nissan Maxima coil problems/recall - petition

Can anyone comment on if they have NOT had luck with buying the coils through someone besides Nissan?
I brought my car to a shop who is quoting ~$1400 to have the work done - he said the coils are ~$181 each!!

i called Nissan, they said they coils are ~$100 for all 6 but that sounds TOO cheap (not looking up the right part?)

I am seeing different prices with Autozone
The mech who quoted $1400 said that he's used off-brand coils in the past for people and they were problematic

This is really ridiculous that its not a recall. i foudn the petition online

I tried ordering two of the cheapies from rockauto and they were bad from the start. When I tried to take one back out, the plastic tube popped off and stayed stuck on the spark plug. Now I need to get two more and I'm wondering if I should just spend the extra money and get the Nissan ones.

Sounds like a similar problem to what I just experienced last week. I bought six of the cheaper ones because my 3 light special (SES, slip, trac ctl) would come on once in a while and there would be the occasional misfire. Oddly, after I put in these "new" ones, the misfires started immediately, and the 3 amber light special stayed on all the time. I tried to take the replacement ones out, and put my original ones back in, and the same thing happened to me with the tube staying stuck on the plug. I'm not sure which brand you purchased, but for me, the Himitzu brand was a loser.

I got a 2k se auto. with 100.000kms and last week for the first time in 4 months ( bought car 4 mos ago) car started to shake like crazy, when stop in a red light, if I put it on N is not that bad but in D and R shakes so bad that I thought at the begining it may be transmission or someting huge like that; Now after reading almost all the 18 pages here I am almost positive is an ignition coil problem, forgot to mention that today the SES, TCS off, Slip light came on and the car is worse than ever.
My question is how can I approach the dealer to see if I can get it done under the free will, or something like that, and if I can't get it, then where can I buy good ignitions coil but not to expensive and if the OEM are better than aftermarket? ( will the OEM go bad again? but I read they are now different that the ones the max came with) Thanks for the help.
