Just a reminder to anyone who hasn't signed the Ignition Coil Petition. Here is the URL:

http://www.petitiononline.com/NIS_IGN/petition.html

***UPDATE
I mailed out a written complaint to Nissan North America on 8/31/04. The letter was similar to the description of this Petition and I also included 601 current Petitioners' signatures.

I have rec'd 2 callbacks since 8/31 from the same rep who informed me that they are still reviewing the request. I'm amazed they haven't rejected it yet, but I expect they will eventually.

Thanks again and I will keep you all posted if I hear anything. Thanks for your participation! --- Chris Iannicello, ohcello@yahoo.com

I have a 2001 GXE that displayed a 'check engine soon' light at 51k. That's when the dealer discovered a coil problem. I hadn't noticed anything except for a slightly rough idle when cold. The car performs much, much better now. I guess the deterioration in performance was so gradual I didn't perceive it. The job cost me the $50 deductible (extended warranty), plus the cost of new plugs which the dealer assured me were needed ($150).

BTW, just to let you know, there will never be a recall on nissans behaif.
New cars that run on coils all have the same problem. You guys should be happy our coils are only about 40 bucks a peice, considering that they run for 200 for some other cars.

I too had coil problems, and I too signed that petition. Then I went to a mechanic who knew what he was doing , and he told me all about coils, how they work, and showed me a price guide to some of the other cars. All I know is that I am glad I got a max.

Just fix the coils, get the new updated ones for 250, and put them in yourself, mad easy.

this would be useful info for the 4th gen '99 Max's since they also have the same coils as the 2K Max's

I am a newbie. I have a 2k with 74k. A clattering noise started around 54K. I was told by the dealership its my gas even though i use premium. I recently connected a OB11 and found no codes. I was now convinced it was mechanical but after speaking to DaveB that feeling changed. He told me u don't always get a code but the noise is definitely symptoms of bad coils. Did anyone have the same experience? By the way, the noise happens upon accelaration.

Thanx

I'm starting to get the same problem on my '03. I've also noticed a decrease in pwr in the last 5k miles. I'm starting to wonder if mine are showing the signs of death to come. Anybody know a quick test? Can you test the resistance across the coils to determine if they are bad or weak? If so, does anyone know what the readings should be? I'm sure anyone on the org can test it if they know the proceedure and values.

What are the simptoms, how do you know you have a bad coil? Will it definitely through a code if one is bad?

In my case i replaced only one, spending ~$65 at the local dealer. Though I know that some people here got their coils from Dave for $40/each. The job is very easy, so you can do it yourself and it should take less then 30 minutes.
$700?? for what??

There is a huge price difference. When I was looking for coils, there was a $150 difference on getting the coils from parts and me installing them. Plus labor, I can see $700.

need a recall

I had to replace mine at 42k miles all 6, cost around 700 bucks, actually a little more because I spend like 200 dollars to get the computer system checked out. Really sucks.

You know, I really wasn't going to post on this thread, but hearing about people paying $600 and $700 is just plain stupid. There is ABSOLUTLY NO REASON TO PAY THIS MUCH FOR THIS PROBLEM.

Call 1-888-254-6060 and ask for Dave Burnett. Tell him that you're an org member and that you need some coils. He can get all six coils for you around $300-$320 shipped.

If you can change spark plugs, then you can change these coils. The changing process isn't that hard. If need be, find a buddy who is mechanically inclined and give him $50 to do it for you. Changing them shouldn't take longer than 40 minutes.

There, simple as that. Don't waste your money by taking it to a dealer or someone else that's going to rip you off. If you really feel the need to waste money, e-mail me and I'll give you an address that you can send unwanted cash.

Can somebody *confirm* that the silver/blue dot on the coil means it is an updated coil?

I had all 6 coils replaced in mid 2002. It took me 4 months to get the dealership to pay for it because it was out of warranty at 45K miles but they finally did. Anyway, the other day my SES light went on. Pulled code P1320, primary ignition failure, and nothing else. Read up on it and found I had bad coil(s). My car's performance was deteriorating rapidly, much hesitation, and it eventually became undrivable. I didn't know which coils to replace, so I bought 2 and decided to swap them around till the problem went away. I replaced coil #1 and #2 and the problem went away. My car is drivable, however I still notice a faint rough idle, and some hesitation after a cold start.

HERE IS THE CATCH!!!

After reading in this forum, it sounds like people are receiving new updated coils with a silver/blue dot on them. The two new coils I bought last week had this dot on them. HOWEVER, the 6 that were currently in my car, the SAME 6 that the dealership replaced in 2002, DID NOT have the silver dot. This would indicate that the dealership replaced my 6 coils with 6 more DEFECTIVE coils, which may be why I am having problems again 30K miles later at 75K miles. This SUCKS and if I find out that the dealership replaced my defective coils with more defective coils I will raise all holy hell... but I need to be sure that the silver/blue dot means this. Thanks.

Here is what Dave B. told me before: The replacement 2K coils have a silver dot on them. The updated 2K1 coils (with a different part number) do not. The 2K1 coils can be used on a 2K Max although they do not advertise that. You probably need to pull the coil to read the part number on it to see if they installed a 2K or 2K1 coil. (It's stretching my memory but I think the old part numbers ended in 0 and 5 and the new ones end in 1 and 6.)

I have a 2000 se max, and i am experiencing cold start problems in the morning. the car actually cuts off about 2 times after starting it up again until it maintains it's normal rpm. i have a check engine light also. the error code is telling me that it is running lean on the right side. i had the o2 sensor replace and i have the same problem. do you think is the ignition coil problem? i had 1 replaced but everyone else in this forum was getting a #3 misfire? is my situation the same?

So what are the symptoms?

I have a 2k SE with 30,000 miles. I did have one coil fail under warantee in the first year. since then nothing.
the car seems fine, which is why I'm asking - what would be the subtle symptoms if the coils were bad/weak?
thanks
PS e-mail me directly

For my 2K, the symptom i had was the check engine light came on along with the slip and tcs (if you dont have traction control you wont have slip and tcs come on). Pulled the code P1320. Diagnosis from nissan was to replace all six coils. I decided to wait and see which coil was bad. Eventually 3-4 months later the car started running rough. I then pulled codes and had a cylinder 2 misfire (p302 i think). Replaced the number2 coil and havent had a problem since. Eventually though I think i'll have to replace the other 5. Waiting on some miracle influx of cash before i do that

I'm in. Haven't replaced mine yet but based on what I'm ordering, I'll buy one tomorrow.

Any reason to buy OEM Nissan ones though? If these are the ones causing problems - why not try aftermarket?

Just replaced coil #4 in my 2000 Maxima GLE with 47,000 km on it. Had code p1320. Here are costs in $Canadian:

Diagnosis - $48
Ignition Coil - $107.95 (after senior discount of 10%)
Service - $40.50
Taxes - $29.48

Total - $225.93

I made a judgement call to replace only the one coil at this time.
If another dies in the next year, I'll replace the other five. Not a fun thing.

How does Nissan get away with this KRAP?

The coils are clearly defective yet like everything else it's easier to get blood from stone than Nissan to fix anything.

Good call.

Ignition Coils and Blown engine

One month after my warrenty expired the Nissan dealer told me that I needed new ones and that this may have been the cause of my blown engine. Maxima and Nissan suck in my opinion.

A bad coil would not be the cause of your engine blowing. Not changing the oil may though.

Rob Collins your an a$$hole, you didn't maintain your car right, and the engine went. My tranny might be dying right now on my 100K mile Maxima- might be a cracked case, and I aint screaming that Nissan sucks. I drive my car HARD, and I expect stuff to go from time to time. If I had a Honda I would need quite a few trannies by now.

Mine's going in for the second time for the same issue. I thought they fixed it the first time (replaced all 6) but the pinging is back. Maybe something else failed this time...

[Edit]

Got my car back from the dealer and they replaced the MAF. Looks like the coil replacement is a onetime repair. Well, for me anyway.

Is it easy to replace these coils? I can change the oil myself.. LOL...so would I be able to do this? The labor charge at the dealer is ridiculous, I'd rather give the $$ to the homeless shelter on the Holiday.
Is there an instruction on line that I can follow?

Thanks

Its really easy - just take the coil off as if you were replacing the spark plug and unplug it from the wire harness.

The rear three are a ***** to get to and will take some time.

2 of the 6 coils were replaced about a month or two before I got my car.

Do the new (replaced) coils go bad like the factory ones? Or is it just that the factory ones suck?

is there a write-up or instructions on how to replace the coils? especially the rear ones, since they are hard to get to.

and another and another - now brake & chg lite on!!

an engine coil went @ ~ 70K luckily still under extended warranty. replaced the spark plugs while i was at it as well. whatever.

now... now... just today my brake and charge lights went on simultaneously. hope i don't die on the road tomorrow. so far braking is fine, fluid is topped off, and i'm driving with the lights and radio on. i'm around 81K now.

on man, i wonder what it is this time...

on the 1 yr anniversary (at about 10K), melissa lane (my max) and i were separated because she needed a new computer. the only problem was that my air conditioner didn't work and the check engine light was on.

If you saw my other post today... yup... SES+TCS OFF+SLIP=Coils (P1320 confirmed)

Do aftermarket coils exist and if so are they any good? Can you tell me who the OEM is for the newer Nissan coils (I assume someone else makes them for Nissan)

Thanks

My 2k maxima now has 119k miles on it and I have had my coils replaced twice. They changed them out once and a couple days later they blew again and had to be replaced again. No problem with them recently...just others...Im afraid to even take my car up to Nissan to run the codes. I simply don't want to know, I can imagine it's going to cost me out the ***.
