hey JJS...i'm not gonna hate on your car, because its a banging car!!!
AE's were sooooo much nicer than reg SE's in 01....I actually wanted to purchase one new back in the day, just couldn't come up with the funds to do the deal....
as for your leather seating, I'd prefer cloth because of many obvious reasons.....
but yeah, your car is most definitely hotness!!

Opinion
Here how I look at this 00/01 vs. 02/03 thing. If options like leather, moonroof, Bose, etc... are important to you over horsepower, you can get a fully loaded 01 SE for the same price as a base model 02 SE. One is faster, but the other is fully loaded. It's your choice.

Why do you think the HIDS's are hideous they light up the road much better than the halogens on the 01's. No one is stealing the HIDS but in the NY area so thats not a wide spread problem. Most of the MAF problems are from guys that have modded out their cars not stock and I havent heard about the front end problem. The tailights are not gaudy looking they are nice(especially on the light colored cars) and nothing like the riced out Civic Altezza'a or even Altima taillights.

My 2 cents
First, a little history. Like the original poster of this thread, I had an older Max ('94 GXE) and had to make the painful decision to get rid of it because the costs of maintenance/repair were greatly outweighing the costs of getting a new car.
Initially, I was looking at an AE. However, when I saw the price of an AE, I nearly choked. Even used, AEs still command a premium (Case in point, the one I looked at was $23,000+). The same day, I drove a 2002 GLE in Majestic Blue and liked that because of the performance. I also liked the amenities offered on the '02 versus the AE (e.g. Trip Computer). After reading the ad for the AE, I decided to get an '02 SE instead because there really was not much of a price benefit between an AE and the '02 SE that I own now.
Another word of wisdom, you can get '02s for a lower price than even AEs.

02-03 is faster stock but the 00-01 is just as fast after Intake/Y-pipe.
If your objective it to get a cheaper car, get 00-01, If you want somthing newer, get 02-03. I like the 02-03 but My car almost paid off, and I hardly drive this one to go spend money on another one.

A benefit of getting the 2K1 is you can get the Nissan AE body kit from your Nissan dealer and the kit makes the 2K1 look awesome. I know because I did that and I would never drive a 2K-2K1 without the kit. If you get the kit, be sure to get the AE painted splash guards to go with it. Awesome. The kit won't fit the 2K2-2K3 models. See my homepage for pics( taken before splash guards were added ).

No dude, it's not. An intake and y-pipe won't shave 1.2 seconds off your 0-60. And it won't add the LOW end torque that ONLY extra displacement or forced induction can give. While it might give similer PEAK torque to the 2k2 (-20+ lbs), it won't make near as much down low, do to the 183cubic inch motor vs. 214cubic inch motor.

Pioneeer,
Post some time slips that show low to mid 14s out of a 2000-2001 with out forced induction. Too many variables come in to play with a ricer video like the one you filmed to be an accurate judge of who has a faster car. If you truly have the 02-03 in top end then you should be trapping in the high 90s, show the slips. Remember, for every bolt on you add to your 3.0L, a guy will be able to do the same to the 3.5L. Look at the times emax and others are posting with similar mods, they're busting into the 13's.

I have a 2K1 SE which is pretty quick for me. I was pretty upset when the 2K2 came out, I bought the 2K1 just a few months befor the announcement was made about the new Altimas and then the Max. One thing that the 00/01 has over the 02/03, as far as I know, is the supercharger and the diff. upgrade. However, they are a bit spendy for the average consumer who would have to have them installed by a mechanic. But you could take the few thousand you saved from the 02/03 and buy the charger. That should solve the power puzzle. But if Nav. leather, and the "luxury" iteams are really important, then maybe just buy the 03. As others have said, to each his own. Drive em both, see which fills your needs the best and buy it. Oh, 2K1 is better....
Or.... Buy an EVO 8 and smoke em all!!!

I traded my awesome 2k1 SE/AE for an 02 SE. Never looked back; only thing I missed was the body kit on the AE, very nice. But the 02 had so much more to offer...no contest b/w them. Both are great cars, but 02 fit my needs much better.

I have been tempted many times to trade up from my 01 SE 5-spd, but I can't justify spending an extra 5-6 grand for basically the same car that is a little faster and has a trip computer. I will wait another 2 years and move up to an Acura/Lexus/Infiniti class car. Just my opinions.
