Isn't there suppose to be a little round metal slat that covers the fuel tank hole that retracts when you put in the fuel nozzle? I just noticed my '03 doesn't have it. Is it suppose to be like that or is it missing?

It should be there, I have a 2003 SE and its there.... If it somehow fell into you're fuel tank, I don't think it could pass through the fuel pump / line, too large.

I'll double check tomorrow when I'm filling up though, just to make sure.

Neither my 02 or my 03 had it. I posted on this a while back; I thought it was strange, too. Neither my son's Honda or my other son's Acura has it either. I guess it is something manufacturers figured they could do without, or at least, regulations changed so that they could eliminate it.

I don't guess it is a problem; just don't drop a lit cigarette down your tank!

My new 2003 SE does not have the metal inner flap covering the gas intake pipe. Feeling around, there is no indication it was ever there.

Assume Nissan believes tethered gas cap is sufficient sealing of this area.

Mine doesn't have it either. Nissan probably decided not to put it on b/c that makes the cars lighter and faster.
