Board's thoughts on best tires?
First of all, I have not posted here in a long time. I am sure this question has been asked MANY times but I seem to be unable to use the search page. If you guys could point me to past threads that would be great, or offer new thoughts here.
I am looking to replace the stock tires on my 2001 Maxima SE 5spd. I want the best dry and wet handling possible, dont care much about noise or comfort. All price ranges acceptable.
Again, sorry if this is one of those oft-repeated questions that **** off the board.

I am personally partial to Falken's and Nittos..only because I've owned both and can speak about how I've driven on them...both are excellent wet/dry and provide great traction with little road noise and nice comfort.
I've heard good things about Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions and some people on here rave about Michelin Pilot Sports....I myself am not a Michelin fan after what I've gone through with MXV's...
hope that helps

The Pilot Sport A/S goes for $197 on tirerack.com.
It doesn't snow where I live (Austin). I would like MUCH better wet performance than what I get with the stock tires.
I drive and corner too fast and I want to get rid of the squealing.

I belive for Stock replacement, the Pilot sports are your BEST bet, there are a few other options, but from what ive heard the pilots will give you the best perforamnce on a stock 17" nissan wheel. You could try to cram another size..but i dont think its reccomended.

Bridgestone S-02s and S-03s are just awesome tires..Nitto 555s are pretty decent 'street' tires and argueably one of the best 'wet' tires(probably why it's not so good for road racing)...

Sumitomo HTR+ are a very well priced Ultra High Performance All Season tire. They have a 360 AA A rating and are about $100 a tire.
They performed almost as well as the Pilot Sport A/S in Tirerack's tests, and also have very good ratings for traction, hydroplaning, and snow. Excellent tire for year round performance.

I have had the Pilots for about 6 months. The grip is better in the rain. It is not subtle difference from stock. It feels better. My old bridgestones tires would trigger the "slip" indicator frequently from the traction control. It rarely occurs with the Pilots. I don't if the Pilots are that good or simply the Brigestones were that bad.

No one has mentioned the semi new Kuhmo MX's. I have a set on my '02 SE and just put on another on my SR20/S13. Very sticky tires, it picks up little pebbles on the tread. Road & Track did a comparo with Pilots and BF Goodrich's KD's and they kept up with those at about $100 less a tire

I'm looking at some Falken 451s myself (235/45/17), I've not heard anything bad.. The only reason I haven't ordered yet is because I'm not so sure what the 0.6" diameter difference is going to look like... It means a 0.3" increase in wheel gap... Does anyone know how much that is going to change the appearance and stance of the car.. It seems like a small amount, but when you consider people only drop their cars 1.5" its a fairly large amount to be increasing... And no, dropping at this point in time is not an option
Any pics of a stock suspension setup of a 5th gen with 235s would be superfantastic!

I have Firestone Firehawks. They are superb in dry and wet handling. Can't do anything in the snow. The noise isn't too bad, nor is the comfort. The threadwear rating is also excellent at 340. The price isn't too bad for the quality of the tire running about $160 to $180 a tire. Considering they should last 50K miles or more. I drive like a maniac, have had the tires for 12K miles, and still have over 75% tread left.

Do not forget about cooper lifeliner SLE, 225/50R17 for $100, I have had them for 3K miles so far, and they are great in slush and snow. My wet weather traction is much improved over the blowtenzas. I have saved them for the track. These are not noisy, and they ride well. They are also rated as 55K tire, UTOG of 360 I believe. They have like a dual channel to sipe out water/snow.

We just replaced the stock 17" wheels on our 2K SE with MOMO Twin 17x8s and went with a 245/45-17 Goodyear F1 GS-D3. They fit perfect since they are one of the narrowest section widths in that size. Ride nice and quiet. Seem much better than the RE92s. Handling, we haven't had them that long but have not read a bad review on them. Plus, they look awesome! Good Luck! Oh, I will be posting an add for our OEM wheels if anyone is interested.

Re: Board's thoughts on best tires?
Michelin PS a/s are f****** amazing tires. I have a sets on 3/5 family cars and WOW. The diff is amazing, esp on the max. The blowtenzas are no match. You could go to Michelin MXV4, but to have them work properly, you'd need to run 39-40lbs of air and rotate like hell (they werent designed for FWD use). Pirelli P7000's are good too as are Bridgestone Potenza S-03's. IMO go w/ the PS a/s. They may be pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Bridgeston RE 950's are great. You will be cruising during torrential downstorms at 75mph in the left lane with the crazy suv drivers. Not that you should be doing that...
You get excellent traction on wet and dry roads, and it won't empty the piggy bank. Get them online or through costco when they have the $60 off 4 tires.
My total came to about 440 for the whole set. You get lifetime balance and rotations, and roadside assistance.
The large grooves on the side of the tire IMO lets you clear water away faster than the stocks do. The tread generates more noise from stocks, however the tires are a great value to conscious consumers.
