Problems after installing Frankencar midpipe

I finished installing my Frankencar midpipe this past weekend...I took my car out for a spin after first getting it installed and I was impressed with the torque gains I felt from it. I did a few runs to close to redline and was happy. I then took it home and turned it off and let it sit for an hour or so.

Now, after I went out and restarted my car, it was idling funny (It was already a little rough after I had my custom catback installed). Now when I try to run the car at WOT and the car hits around 4,000 rpm, my car has serious lag...It's like my variable intake won't kick over and won't pull at all...The car will still climb the RPM's, but at a very slow pace, and the car is seriously holding back.

I know it isn't the MAF, cause it will still pull and go to redline, just with the lag and rought idle...I have checked and rechecked and undone and reconnected everything 3 or 4 times now, and still the same problems.

Anyone ever experienced this before, or does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? BTW, I have a 2000 5 spd

Are you sure your wire harness it pluged it good to the maf? No bent leads? and there are no air leaks behind the maf like at the TB? Check these again. Also after checking that disconnect the battery over night with the dome light on.

I have done all these things, including leaving my battery undone and pumping the brakes to clear the ECU...All fittings have been checked and rechecked, including the MAF, temp sensor and all apdapters..I am afraid it is something with the actual throttle body or variable intake...

If worse comes to worse, I am going to put the stock midpipe back on, leave my stillen filter the way it was and see how that works...It's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

1) If it's the variable intake it will pull just as hard to about 4-4.2k 2) If it's the TB you can check the butter fly by having a friend step on the gas while you look into it. 3) If it's either of those 2 then it doesn't matter what you do with the filter or mid pipe you'll still have the prob.
Try going back to stock and see if the prob is still there. If so you'll be ready to go to the dealer.

Yeah, that is what I said in my original post...it will pull hard to 4,000 and then the problem occurs...So I am thinking the problem is with the variable intake

Thanks for your info

Check the vacuum lines on the intake. Also a malfunctioning VIAS should throw a code# P1800

How fast of an internet connection do you have?

+1

Make sure that the vacuum line that connects to the block is tight, did you use a breather filter on this, this is what your problem sounds like.

I just blew my MAF... if your 2000 is a cali emmisions then I believe there is a TSB out for the MAF and the dealer will replace it if you put it back to stock. They said that a new MAF would be $480 for just the part, no labor.

Make sure that it is not just K&N oil on the actual sensor, some 5th gens have the signs of a faulty MAF because of K&N oil on the sensor, after they wiped it off everything was fine, you have probably already tried this but thought I would just mention it.

Actually, it is funny you mention this...I haven't tried wiping down my MAF yet, and the symptoms stared right after I cleaned and olied my k&N...or course I only oiled it lightly, but it is definitely worth a try

hhmm...sounds like I have a new project when I get home

Thanks for the info!

ok guys, what entails wiping down the MAF? What exactly needs to be wiped down? The inside of the tube, the electrical connections, the black box or what?

Lemme Know!

From what I remember it was the metal thingies that hang down inside the MAF, I have never done this so wait until another person who saw the same post chimes in (and I just called the parts you need to clean thingies) but this will at least bump this post to the top, if that doesn't work you may want to start a new thread, I hope I just saved you $450 because if you just cleaned your filter it is a strong possibility.

nice, thanks for the info..Is there anyone out there that has actuall done the cleaning...Also, what tool did you use to pull the MAF from the MAF tube...It has security bolts in the tube that lock it down?

Anymore info would be greatly appreciated

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

It's what they file when you need to have preventive maintenance done to your car...there are various websites where you can go review these TSB's

ok i know this may sound weird but when this happened to me i took the filter off and sprayed 3M brake cleaner onto the MAF, let it sit a couple (5min) reattached the filter, started the car and it stopped the hesitation.

I was gonna try this, but with engine degreaser instead...Brake cleaners scares me, from my understanding, it is one of the most acidic of all the cleaners.

I didn't think that my K&N or oil from the K&N was the problem..I guess I have another project tonight
