Question about 5th gen Auto OD button

After a lof of cutting and grinding and loosing certain functionality (more on that later) - I managed to transplant a 5th Gen leather wrapped shift **** to my 96 GXE. The old OD button and the new one are different in functionality where in the old shifter - I press the button - "o/d off" light comes on and the button stays pressed (recessed) until I press it again and the "OD off" goes away.

On the new one - when I press the button - it doesn't stay pressed. What I am wondering is of this is the way the 5th gen's were designed to work - where if you are cruising on 4th - a press of the button kicks it down to third, but it will be a momentary downshift and will not hold 3rd indefineatly?

Or is it such that that the press of the button turns o/d off until another press of the button truns o/d on again????

I have never driven an automatic 5th - so please help.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance...

I have a 2001 and my O/D button doen't stayed pushed in when I press it. I press it once, O/D goes off, press it again, O/D goes on... That's the way mine works anyway.

Guess my suspicions were right then. So Nissan changed the tranny ecu from early 4th gen's. I thought of the Pro's and Con's and the bad part is that I can't hold 3rd anymore. The good part is that pressing that button is like a quick 4-3 downshift and I don't have to worry about the upshift again.

Guess I just have to live with this.
